Spring practice update
By Troy Miller
THE BATTALION
Spring drills for the Texas
A&M football team are at the
halfway mark and the new
regime led by Head Coach
Dennis Franchione released its
first depth chart after Tuesday’s
practice session.
In the spirit of the 12th Man,
Franchione has every player par
ticipating in spring drills on the
chart. Depth charts are tradition
ally only two players deep at
each position.
“1 don’t put a lot of weight in
this (depth chart),” Franchione
said. “We have to be able to start
to work as units and these are the
guys who deserve to be in these
positions at this point in time,
but it’s only after eight practices
and we still have 30 something
more to go.”
A few changes were made in
positions as redshirt freshman
Chad Schroeder has been moved
from wide receiver to quarter
back. Redshirt freshman Andy
Matakis has been moved from
linebacker to tight end and
junior Jason Carter has been
moved from quarterback to the
A-back position.
“A is a multi-purpose posi
tion,” Franchione said. “It’s a
tailback, wide receiver, slot
receiver, and (Carter) can play
in three of four different loca
tions in our offense. It’s a move
we did not force on him. We just
felt like that we needed to have
him involved in our 22 best
football players.”
Schroeder moves to quarter
back where he was a standout at
Austin Westlake High School
and led Westlake to the Texas
State Championship in 2001.
The move for Schroeder will
most likely be temporary.
“He had pulled a hamstring
and has not practiced much,”
Franchione said. “So this gives
him a way to reduce the risk of
reinjury and gives us a contin
gency plan for quarterback
depth.”
The Aggies are also getting
used to the new 4-3 formation
on defense as opposed to the 3-
4 run under R.C. Slocum. In the
new defensive formation the
Aggies will have four down
linemen and three linebackers
as opposed to three down line
men and four linebackers.
FRANCHIONE
The largest
change for the
defensive
linemen is
learning to
play defensive
end, which is
not utilized in
a 3-4 defense.
“We want
to try to find that speed rusher
on the end on passing situa
tions,” Franchione said.
Tuesday’s practice also saw
the first time the Aggie offense
went through two-minute drills.
The offense would start from
the opponent’s 20-yard line and
work its way downfield in a
live game situation.
“The thing that you gain that
is so valuable out of that is com
munication under pressure,”
Franchione said. “I was very
encouraged by what I saw.”
The next spring practice for
the Aggies will be Wednesday
from 3:30-6:30 on the practice
fields adjacent to Kyle Field.
Practices are open to the public
to watch.
Spring drills will culminate
on Saturday, April 12 when the
Aggies will scrimmage in the
annual Maroon & White Game
at 2 p.m.
NASCAR admits error
By Jenna Fryer
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
NASCAR admitted it made a
mistake at Texas Motor
Speedway when Matt Kenseth
was allowed to keep the race lead
even though Jeff Gordon had
passed him under a caution flag.
“If we had to do that call over
again, we would have done it dif
ferently,” NASCAR president
Mike Helton said Tuesday.
Kenseth was leading midway
through Sunday’s race when the
caution flag came out. As he
approached the start-finish line,
he slowed to let teammates Kurt
Busch, Jeff Burton and Roush
Racing-affiliated driver Ricky
Rudd pass.
Gordon, second at the time,
did not want that to happen. So he
sped and passed Kenseth to
retake the lead before they
crossed the line.
NASCAR does not have a rule
prohibiting drivers from racing
back to the line under a caution,
yet officials in the tower said
Gordon could not pass Kenseth.
Helton said NASCAR ruled
because it was a scenario the
sanctioning body had never seen
before. He said drivers are typi
cally told that the leader makes
the decision on whether to allow
lapped cars by him before cross
ing the line.
Most racing under yellow-flag
conditions is typically done under
a gentlemen’s agreement between
the drivers in which more times
than not, everyone stays in line
with only lapped cars trying to
gain position.
Since there is no written rule,
Helton said NASCAR should not
have gotten involved on
Gordon’s pass.
NASCAR also drew heavy
criticism for Saturday’s Busch
race in which leader Brian
Vickers — Gordon’s teammate
at Hendrick Motorsports — was
penalized for passing a lapped
car before the start-finish line on
the restart.
