nents by a collective score of 45-3.
“The home court in any sport
is extremely important to pro
tect,” said A&M Head Coach Tim
Cass. “We have a good home
schedule and it is fun for us to
play at home, it is something that
they take great pride in.”
The Tide started the season in
impressive fashion, winning their
first 11 matches, while climbing
the national polls. Alabama
topped out at No. 11 just before
the end of February. Since then,
things have slipped a bit as the
men hit conference play. The
Tide have dropped four of their
first six conference matches,
most recently losing at home
against No. 6 Ole Miss. Despite
the loss, Alabama is still held in
high regard in the national polls.
The losses initially dropped the
Crimson Tide down as far as No.
19, but that was before the polls
switched from a committee to the
computer formula-based system
which boosted the club back to
No. 15 heading into Saturday.
“Because of our challenging
SEC and non-conference sched
ule we were able to move up. The
only ranking that matters is the
final one,” Pate said.
The match comes at an excel
lent time for the Aggies, who have
finally answered many of their
lingering questions. After a bit of
experimenting, Cass and the
squad finally seem to have found
a combination that works for them
on the doubles point, moving
senior Ryan Newport and sopho
more Lester Cook back together
at one, and moving sophomore
Ante Matijevic to court three with
junior Khaled El Dorry.
The Aggies put their 12 match
home win streak on the line
Saturday at the Tennis Center
beginning at 6 p.m.
Softball

a great change-up. We saw
her a lot on the recruiting
trails, but we have yet to
face her in a game.”
Meanwhile, Nebraska (18-
4) will also be coming off of its
first conference games as the
Buskers opened conference
play with a doubleheader in
Lincoln against No. 3
University of Oklahoma on
Thursday. The Huskers have
been on a tear lately, defeating
No. 9 Cal State-Fullerton on
March 14 to gain the best 20
game start in school history.
The Huskers are led by strong
pitching from James and
Tobias and senior left fielder
Lisa Wangler, who currently
has a blistering .395 batting
average. Although the Huskers
are currently riding high, past
games with the Aggies have
been hotly contested.
“There is a great friendly
rivalry between Nebraska and
A&M, and many games in the
past have come down to the
wire,” said Nebraska Head
Coach Ronda Revelle. “A&M
has had some close losses they
wish that they could redo, and
so do we. (Former Nebraska
Athletic Director) Bill Byrnes
has gone 5-0 against Nebraska
since he’s been at A&M, and
there is a lot of pressure to
keep a perfect record. We will
be looking to change that.”
The Aggies will have two
more home games before hit
ting the road again when Sam
Houston State University
comes to College Station for a
doubleheader on Wednesday
with the first pitch at 5 p.m.
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Aggies defend home
court, beat Sooners
The No. 29 Texas A&M women’s
tennis team defeated the Oklahoma
Sooners in Big 12 action at the A&M
Tennis Center Thursday night.
The Aggies (9-6) started off with an
early 1-0 lead by claiming two of the
three doubles matches from OU.
Senior Ashley Hedberg, juniors
Jessica Roland and Roberta Spencer
and freshman Nicki Mechem record
ed singles victories in the contest.
No. 32 OU had entered the match
with an 11-1 record this season.
The Aggies’ next matchup against
Colorado, originally scheduled to take
place Friday, has been postponed
until Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Any ticketholders for Friday’s
match should present their tickets at
the gate on Sunday for admission.
