Dr. R. Bradley Sack, director of Johns Hopkins’
international travel clinic. “People immediately
start thinking of 1917,” the year a worldwide flu
epidemic killed at least 20 million people.
Experts discounted the possibility that tenor-
ism is the source and believe it almost certainly is
a contagious infection that spreads most easily
from victims to their doctors, nurses and families
through coughing, sneezing and other contact with
nasal fluids.
“Nothing about that pattern suggests bioter
rorism,” said Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
in Atlanta.

The summit, held at a U.S.

less than two hours of talks. No
more was needed, U.S. officials
said, because the conclusion
was preordained.
Even as they flew to a meet
ing billed as a last-ditch bid at
diplomacy, Bush and his advis

address that he could deliver as
early as Monday night. The
speech would give Saddam a
final ultimatum to disarm or face

At a post-summit news con

Venezuela rations
water in drought
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) —
After coping with food and fuel
shortages during a recent two-
month strike, Venezuelans are
now dealing with scarcity of
another essential: water.
This South American country
is facing a drought that is severe
even for its dry season, which
runs from November to May.
The government imposed water
rationing in Caracas, whose 5
million residents are without
water two to four days a week.
Things are especially tough for
residents of the red-brick shan
tytowns that cling to the moun
tains ringing the city. The short
age is forcing slum dwellers to
rely on water delivered by truck.
