ATHENS, Ga. — University
of Georgia fired assistant bas
ketball coach Jim Harrick Jr. on
Wednesday after he was
accused of academic fraud and
paying a former player’s bills.
Athletic director Vince
Dooley announced that
Harrick’s contract would not be
renewed when it expires June
30. In the meantime, the son of
head coach Jim Harrick
remains suspended with pay.
Harrick Jr. was at Stegeman
Coliseum on Tuesday night when
the No. 25 Bulldogs defeated the
No. 3 Florida Gators. He
watched the game from a tunnel
next to the Georgia bench and did
not speak with the media.
Harrick Jr. was suspended
by the school after allegations
by former player Tony Cole,
who accused the coach of pay
ing off phone and hotel bills.
Cole has a receipt from
Western Union that says .he
received $300 from “Jim
Harrick” to cover the phone
HARRICK, JR.
work for
charges.
Even more serious. Cole
charged that he received an
“A” for a
coaching class
taught by
Harrick Jr.,
even though
he never
attended.
Also, Cole
alleged the
coach did
correspondence
courses the player took before
entering Georgia.
Dooley was traveling
Wednesday and not immediate
ly available for comment. He
issued a statement merely say
ing Harrick Jr. served at the
pleasure of the athletic director.
In a related development, the
head of Georgia’s Physical
Education and Sports Studies
department received a letter of
reprimand. Harrick Jr. taught a
course in the department known
as “Coaching Principles and
Strategies of Basketball.”
Department head Paul G.
Schempp was reprimanded by
Arnett C. Mace Jr., interim
senior vice president for acade
mic affairs and provost.
“The university’s internal
procedures were not followed in
assigning faculty to the particu
lar course which is the focus of
the current investigation,” Mace
said. “Professor Schempp is
officially reprimanded for
allowing that to happen.”
The letter of reprimand
becomes a permanent part of
Schempp’s personnel file.
University president
Michael Adams, who was
instrumental in the hiring of
the senior Harrick in 1999,
issued a statement supporting
the moves.
“I have been kept fully
informed of the progress of the
investigation and support the
appropriate actions taken today
by the athletic director and the
provost,” Adams said.
Former star’s
appeal denied
By Kelly P. Kissell
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Arkansas Court
of Appeals on Wednesday upheld the conviction
of a fonner Southern Methodist University foot
ball star charged with raping girls he met while
working as a substitute teacher.
Emanuel Q. Tolbert, 44, claimed evidence
against him was insufficient and that he was barred
from asking questions that might have shown that
the victims were biased against him because they
intended to sue him for civil damages.
The Court of Appeals rejected all of his
arguments.
Tolbert was arrested in 2000 after three girls,
ages 14, 15 and 17, told authorities he had taken
them to his honje and had sex with them. Police
said two of the girls attended Hall High School,
where Tolbert was a substitute, and the third
attended nearby Forest Heights Junior High.
At a trial in 2001, Tolbert was convicted of rape
and violation of a minor of a child in the first
degree. He was sentenced to 15 years for rape and
four years on the violation charge, with the sen
tences to run concurrently.
Tolbert played football at Little Rock Central
High and then SMU, where he broke school
records and was an All-America player in 1978. He
spent 11 years in the Canadian Football League.
The Court of Appeals relied heavily on two of
the girls’ testimony — but also cited Tolbert’s own
admission — in rejecting Tolbert’s claim that there
was insufficient evidence. Charges pertaining to
the third girl were severed from the case, but that
girl also testified. Two other students who said
Tolbert solicited them also appeared in court.
The court said the testimony showed Tolbert’s
intent, motive and plan to develop a sexual rela
tionship with his students.
Tolbert also said he wanted to ask lawyers’ rep
resenting victims about whether they intended to
file a civil lawsuit against him. The Appeals Court
ruled the trial court was correct in finding the ques
tion improper.
The judges also said Tolbert was not allowed to
go on a fishing expedition with questions about
one of the girls’ allegedly having been in juvenile
detention for dishonesty.
In 2001, Tolbert pleaded guilty to another
charge of violation of a minor. He was sentenced
to 16 additional years, to be served concurrently.
He was charged as a habitual offender because of
his convictions from the previous case.
Tolbert was on the All-Southwest Conference
team in 1977 and 1978 and was an AP All-
America player in 1978, Tolbert still holds many
SMU athletic records, including marks for the
most touchdown catches in a game, four; in a sea
son, 11; and career, 25.

men have to finish the season with a high team
ranking. The Aggies’ No. 14 ranking will get
thrown out the window as they prepare to head to
Austin again.
“It’s nice to get the recognition,” Nash said.
“We have a very well-balanced dual-meet team
but as far as coming into the NCAAs, it doesn’t
matter at all. We are a little better dual meet
team than we are championship team.”
The men’s 400-yard freestyle relay team has
an NCAA consideration time, as do sophomore
Dan Blanchard and junior Scott Mueller in the
100 freestyle, sophomore Alfredo Jacobo, who
set a school record at the Big 12 meet, and fresh
man Alex Dawson in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Despite the fact that few swimmers around
the nation have been putting up record-setting
times this season, Nash says qualifying NCAA
times might improve because of the increasing
number of talented swimmers in recent years.
“We’ll find out a lot more this weekend,”
Nash said. “No one is out there that has been
shocking the world, but the depth is improving
every year, and the fastest time may not
improve, but the time to get into the
Championship does.”
This weekend’s meet will begin today and
last until Sunday. The NCAA Championships
will take place March 27-29.
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Football team participates in
“Night of Champions” event
The Texas A&M football team will host a
weightlifting exhibition tonight at G. Rollie White
Coliseum. A&M Head Coach Dennis Franchione
developed the event, which will include a select
group of Aggie football players competing for
school records in events such as the bench press,
incline press, squats and the power clean.
The event is entirely free of charge and open
to the public.
“The Night of Champions is a fun event, and 1
hope we get an excellent turnout by our fans,"
Franchione said.
In all, 16 A&M football players will lift in the event.
Franchione said he has used the "Night of
Champions" during his career to reward players for
their hard work during strenuous offseason workouts.
Franchione said he chose players based on their
hard work in team workouts.
“It is quite an honor to be selected for this event,”
he said. “The players who have set records, or are
near records, and those who have worked the hard
est are chosen."
The evening’s events are scheduled to begin at
7 p.m. Those unable to attend can watch live
video coverage on AggieAthletics.com.
