Nevada considers
taxing prostitutes
By Adam Goldman
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PAH RUMP, Nev. — The
manager of one of Nevada’s
lest brothels proudly walks the
2)7 acres that surround The
Resort at Sheri’s Ranch, point
ing to the $7 million expansion
lat opened last year. She glows
then talking
tout the sports
lar, the themed
lungalows, the
lacuzzi rooms.
“Business is
jood,” says
iaraine Harper.
So good that
several Nevada
liwmakers think
tie industry
slould do more
titan fulfill sexual
fantasies. With the
state facing a
deficit of up to
8704 million,
some legislators want to tax the
fees of Nevada prostitutes in what
could be the ultimate sin tax.
Brothels and hookers in
Nevada — are subject to federal
income tax on their overall earn
ings, and have to pay various
county taxes and fees. But
Nevada has no state income tax.
u
What are the
girls going to do?
Have a calculator in
the room? The girls
arentthe best at
math.
Some say a state tax on sex
'acts would further legitimize an
industry that many people prefer
to keep at arm’s length.
The brothel owners are not
particularly enthusiastic, either.
“What are the girls going to
do?” asked Geoff Arnold, presi
dent of the Nevada Brothel
Association. “Have a calculator
in the room? The girls aren’t the
best at math.”
Gov. Kenny
Guinn has pro
posed a 7.3 per
cent tax on
entertainment
and admissions
that is expected
to generate
$82.5 million in
its first year.
There are 28
licensed brothels
operating in 10
of Nevada’s 17
counties. The
state Health
Division esti-
— Geoff Arnold
president of the Nevada
Brothel Association
mates 365,000 sex acts are per
formed in Nevada’s brothels
annually, or 1,000 a day.
Prostitutes are independent
contractors, with most splitting
their fees with brothels.
Depending on what lawmakers
decide, the prostitutes could be
responsible for paying some or
all of the 7.3 percent tax.
NEWS IN BRIEF
Professor accused of
terrorism is fired
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The com
puter engineering professor
charged with running the
American operations of a
Palestinian terrorist group was
Wednesday by the
University of South Florida.
Sami Al-Arian, who had been
suspended since shortly after
the 2001 terrorist attacks, was
found to have abused his posi
tion at the university, USF presi
dent Judy Genshaft said.
"Dr. Al-Arian's statements
about his activities have been
false and misleading,"
Genshaft said.
Al-Arian, 45, was arrested last
week. He and seven others are
accused in a 121-page federal
indictment of setting up a ter
rorist cell at the university and
funneling support to the
Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which
the government says has killed
more than 100 people in Israel
and its territories.
