THE BATTALION
A&M travels to Kansas State
By Troy Miller
THE BATTALION
When a basketball team’s
leading scorer finishes with only
11 points, that usually spells trou
ble. That fact was no different for
the Texas A&M women’s basket
ball team (10-13, 3-9 Big 12) as it
lost 38-46 to Iowa State.
Junior guard Toccara Williams
and junior forward Janae Derrick
both had 11 points to lead the
Aggies. A&M shot only 30.6 per
cent from the field in the game.
“We just didn't shoot the ball
well,” said A&M Head Coach
Peggie Gillom. "We didn’t score,
but we had the shots. We can't
wait until late in the game to try to
come back and win.’’
This is nothing new to the
Aggies, as they have shot 38.5
percent from the field for the sea
son. Shooting is the key for this
Aggie team having only lost one
game in Big 12 play in which
they shot 40 percent or better.
Now the Aggies set their
NEWS IN BRIEF
WILLIAMS
sights on No. 5
Kansas State
(24-2, 11-1 Big
12) who could
be their tough
est opponent
yet. If the
Aggies want to
compete, they
must be able to
shoot the ball better than they
have lately.
KSU has won six straight
games since its loss to Iowa State
in Ames, Iowa. The Wildcats are
also undefeated at home at Fred
Bramlage Coliseum and will have
its third consecutive sellout when
the Aggies travel to Manhattan,
Kan.
Good defense will be crucial
for the Aggies. Against Iowa
State, A&M allowed a three-
point barrage which crippled the
Aggies early.
“(Iowa State senior guard
Lindsey) Wilson got those threes
right off the bat,” Gillom said.
“We guarded her much better in
the second half, but left others
with wide open threes.”
Overall, the Cyclones hit six of
17 three-point attempts to shoot
35.3 percent from behind the arc.
Kansas State is even better from
behind the three-point arc.
Sophomore guard Megan
Mahoney averages 13.6 points
per game and is 43 for 98 from
behind the three-point arc.
Sophomore guard Laurie
Koehn is fourth on the team in
scoring by averaging 13.5 points
per game and shooting 43 percent
from three-point land.
The Wildcats have exhibited
some subpar first half play this
season, but typically they have
been able to bounce back late.
“Obviously, when you line up
against the top-tier teams in this
league, your leeway is much
smaller,” said KSU Head Coach
Deb Patterson. “So, I don't know
that it is always a good thing, but
1 do respect our team’s ability
to fight.”
Texas A&M will travel to
Kansas State to face the Wildcats
Saturday at 2 p.m.

Aggies pursue sweep
of conference rival Tech
The Texas A&M men's basketball
team will attempt to defeat the Texas
Tech Red Raiders for the second time
this season on Saturday.
The Aggies (13-9, 5-6 Big 12) kept
Tech Head Coach Bobby Knight from
reaching his 800th win when the two
teams met on Feb. 1 at Reed Arena.
This week, the Red Raiders (14-8, 4-
7 Big 12) will be playing on their
home court. Knight's team is still in
search of its fifth conference win after
losing to the No. 3-ranked Texas
Longhorns, 77-65.
A&M enters Saturday's game riding a
66-54 victory over conference rival
Iowa State University. A&M senior
guard Bernard King scored 17 points
in the winning effort.
Saturday's game is scheduled to
begin at 12:45 p.m.
Continued from page 5
helping lead the Sooners to three Big 12 championships
and a national championship.
“I’ve faced A&M before with OU, and I know Coach
Evans does a great job,” said Wichita State Head Coach
Tim Walton. “We are excited to come down to College
Station where the crowd is always into the games. I think
you’ll see quality effort from our team from innings one
through seven.”
Evans said she anticipates a tough game, facing her for
mer Big 12 counterpart.
“Wichita State has a new head coach in Tim Walton,
and I know that he’ll have his team prepared,” she said.
“We don’t know a lot about the teams that we’ll play this
weekend, but every game is important to us because we
need to win them to help us achieve our goal of getting
to the World Series.”
The Aggies also face a Southeastern Louisiana team this
weekend that is hungry for a win and looking to play the
role of spoiler. The Lions have already faced a murderous
schedule that includes teams such as No. 11 Florida State
and No. 13 Georgia. The team competed in the Florida
State University Seminole Classic and the Louisiana-
Monroe Mardi Gras Classic, with the Lions’ only win com
ing against Mardi Gras Classic tournament winner Tulsa.
