Doctors suggest new tests
upon finding rare brain disease
BOSTON (AP) — A human brain-wasting illness
- a close relative of one resembling mad cow dis
ease — also infects the nasal passages,
researchers have discovered, raising the prospect
of a diagnostic test.
Right now, there is no cure or way to diag
nose the fatal disease, known as sporadic
Creutzfeldt-Jakob. A diagnostic test could help
select patients for experimental treatments, said
the Italian researchers who published their find
ings Thursday in The New England Journal of
Medicine.
The sporadic disease, without a clear cause, is
the most common form in a family of CreutifeMt-
Jakob diseases striking about one in a million people.
