AUSTIN — Texas prisons
could reach their operating
capacity within a few days, offi
cials said Tuesday, prompting
the state to consider shortening
drug treatment programs and
renting beds in county jails to
free up more space.
“We have to look at imme
diate short-term options,” said
Larry Todd, spokesman for the
Texas Department of Criminal
Justice.
Operating capacity is not
maximum capacity. Instead, it is
the figure prison officials say
allows for the most efficient
operations of the prisons.
Texas prisons have 151,470
beds for inmates with an opti
mal operating capacity of 97.5
percent, or about 147,680
inmates. As of Friday, the state
had 147,600 inmates, Todd said.
“When we get to full capaci
ty, we have inmates living much
closer and the tensions start to
increase,” Todd said.
Although officials had antici
pated the problem would hap
pen within a few months, or
even a few weeks, Tuesday’s
warnings moved up the
timetable dramatically.
Texas prisons release about
5,000 inmates a month while
taking in about 5,500. The total
population changes every day.
Reducing the length of sub
stance abuse programs would
open up about 2,000 beds, Todd
said. 1 Officials are also research
ing whether some rural counties
might have room in their jails to
house low-risk state inmates.

Gillom sajd she expects tough play from her
team on both ends of the court in Ames this week
and made no excuses for her team’s sporadic con
ference play.
“Yes, the Big 12 is tough,” she said. “But,
we’re going up there to win a game. We’re not
going up there to lose.”
The Cyclones can ill afford to drop another
conference game, particularly a home game
against another struggling program. ISU Head
Coach Bill Fennelly has found himself in unfa
miliar territory this season after an impressive 24-
9 campaign last year. This season's 5-6 non-con
ference record is the only losing record in non
conference play during Fennelly’s seven-year
tenure at Iowa State.
“(This season) has been interesting, and it's
not something you want to go through,” he said.
“But. I think you learn something about yourself
and your belief system. I think it makes you
appreciate even more the success you've had in
this league and in general.”
The Cyclones have not been successful in
three straight games, including a 69-54 loss to
No. 11 Texas on Saturday. Senior point guard
Lindsey Wilson put up 22 points in the losing
effort, marking the 10th time this year that she has
scored more than 20 points. ISU’s limited depth
was apparent against the Longhorns, as onlj
seven Cyclone players saw playing time in the
game.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
