THE BATTALION
Softball team to host SWT Bobcats
By Pete Burks
THE BATTALION
In the next couple of weeks,
Ihe Texas A&M softball team will
be preparing for Big 12
Conference play. However, it
must still run the gauntlet of non
conference teams first. One of the
teams that will test the No. 24
Aggies is Southwest Texas State
University. The Aggies will head
to San Marcos Wednesday to face
a Bobcat team (8-8) that is com
ing off a tournament win of its
own, going 5-0 in the New
Mexico State Tournament this
past weekend.
Although their record is
only .500, the Bobcats are
surging at the right time, and
they are not a team that the
Aggies will take lightly.
“They are a great team and
have played a really strong sched-
Basketball
ule,” said A&M Head Coach Jo
Evans. “We will have to play well
to beat them, and we will have to
be more consistent at the plate.
Southwest Texas has always
played us well.”
The Aggies should go into
Wednesday with plenty of confi
dence, as they won the St.
Joseph’s Aggie Invitational last
weekend, going 3-1 overall in
the tournament.
The Aggies are led by senior
catcher and U.S.A. Collegiate
Softball Player of the Year can
didate Selena Collins, who is
currently batting .296 with
three home runs and 10 RBIs.
Collins said that taking two
games from the Bobcats will be
no easy task.
“We know they’re good,”
Collins said. “They have a lot of
big hitters, and they will use rise-
ball pitchers against us, which is
something we have struggled
with in the past. We just need to
be disciplined at the plate as
opposed to trying to hit pitches
they want us to swing at.”
a
We will have to
play well to heat
them. Southwest
Texas has always
played us well
— jo Evans
A&M Head Softball Coach
Meanwhile, Southwest Texas
will look to further its recent suc
cess. Defensively, the Bobcats
have been nothing short of over
powering, allowing only nine
runs in their last five games.
Junior pitcher Nicole Neuerberg
(4-4) led the Bobcat defense by
tallying up three wins and 31
strikeouts en route to a minute
.062 ERA for the weekend.
In addition, the Bobcats got
some offensive help from one of
their surprising youngsters.
Freshman first baseman Hannah
Snow rounded out her weekend
with a solid .538 batting average,
going 7 for 13, including three
doubles and a home run. She now
leads the Bobcat team with eight
doubles on the season.
As Southwest Texas’s sched
ule will attest, the Bobcats wel
come the challenge of playing
highly ranked teams, and facing
A&M will be no different.
“It will be good to get A&M at
home,” said Southwest Texas
Head Coach Ricci Woodard.
“Getting a team with A&M’s cal
iber is always good for us.”

turn out for Wednesday night’s game but says
the team is focused on winning regardless of
ihe crowd size.
"This is a game we have to win,” he said.
“We’re still in the race and we have to play
hard to get where we want to get.”
Things don’t look good for the Cyclones,
who have lost 14 straight games on the road,
including their 70-51 loss to No. 9 Kansas
on Sunday.
Iowa State Head Coach Larry Eustachy
said he knows Wednesday night’s game at
Reed Arena will be another tough game on the
road for his Cyclone team.
“We need a win desperately but so do they
with what they’re trying to do,” he said.
“We’re catching a team that’s coming off of a
loss that’s going to be very very difficult to
beat. Texas A&M is a tournament-possible
team. I think they’re that good.”
Junior guard Jake Sullivan leads Iowa
State with 18.3 points pier game and shoots
45.8 percent from behind the three-point line.
“(Sullivan) is the one we have to shut
down,” King said. “If we shut him down and
make the other players beat us we have a good
chance (to get the win).”
Watkins said he hopes students understand
the importance of this game even though it is
not against a ranked opponent that can be seen
on the highlight reels.
“We’re in the hunt for some big things this
year,” he said. “Every game becomes bigger,
more critical for us and Iowa State is a big
game for us. We need our student and fan sup
port out here to help us as they have, especial
ly in the Texas Tech game.” ■
The* Aggies have three more games at
home. Don’t miss a chance to see what could
be the best Aggie basketball team in recent
memory.
The game against Iowa State is scheduled
to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
