One night while camping on this trip, he proposed, and we have been happily married ever since.” With the pressure of Valentine’s Day approaching, deciding on the perfect gift can be harder than deciding on the perfect Valentine. When choosing an ideal gift, however, one can look further than the nearest Tiffany’s. Some students, such as Katelyn Beasley, have had success by cre ating their own special gifts. “The best gift I ever gave was a scrapbook full of pictures to my boyfriend. It took a while to put together, but going the pictures NEWS IN BRIEF Antiwar demonstrators banned from inarching near the United Nations NEW YORK (AP) - A federal appeals court agreed Wednesday that the city did not violate the First Amendment when it banned antiwar demonstrators from marching near the United Nations next weekend. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it could find no errors in a judge's ruling this week that found the city acted legally when it per mitted a rally for 100,000 people or more, but barred a march this Saturday. "This is a stunning blow to democracy, to the liberties we all thought we could rely on, even in times of hostility," said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, which brought the issue to federal court. Teachers and directors walk off New York day care center job in one-day strike NEW YORK (AP) — Teachers and directors at 358 city-funded day-care centers walked off the job in a one-day strike Wednesday, forcing par ents of some 50,000 children to either take time off themselves or make other arrangements. The walkout was called to press the workers' demand for a raise — a goal Noel Lawlor supports even though she had to ask her sister to watch her 4-year-old son, Dameon. "I just feel like they should be able to get an increase," Lawlor, who could not take time off from her job as an accountant. "They have to survive like everybody else." About 2,000 of the centers' staff members gathered at a park near City Hall, waving signs and chanting, "No contract, no work!" Raglan George, executive director of District Council 1707, which rep resents some 7,000 teachers at the centers, addressed his remarks to Mayor Michael Bloomberg: "The time is now, Mr. Bloomberg. Give us our money now!" District Council 1707 and the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, which represents the centers' directors and assistant directors, are demanding a 4 percent annual raise, comparable to what other municipal workers have received in recent contracts. Union officials said day-care teachers and administrators earn about 527,000 to $39,000 a year. Public school teachers start at $39,000. The day-care teachers and administrators have been without a con tract for two years. ❖ Let the sound of Mariachi music fill your sweetheart’s day with romantic melodies on Valentines Day. ❖ Texas A & M University's first Mariachi will take orders @ 40 Dollars for 3 songs. ❖ Time preference will be given on a first-come first serve basis { First Twenty Bids ) ❖ 6 p.m. through 2 a.m. •Contact : Armando Guerra ® 956-645-8260 Lucy Huereca ® 979-847-0320 (Proceeds will assist in purchasing Mariachi suits) brought back a lot of treasured memories we had shared,” said Beasley, a freshman biology major. “It did not take a lot of money and it was still a good gift." Although he was single last Feb. 14, Eric Alvarez, a freshman aerospace engineering major, said he had a Valentine’s Day to remember. Alvarez said he was ambushed by his friends and taken to a strip club where he received an erotic dance. “1 was not planning on getting anything, so it was a pleasant sur prise,” he said. “It definitely made my Valentine’s better.” Moriah Hronek, a freshman general studies major, said her room benefited from a particularly extravagant Valentine’s Day present. “The best gift I ever received on Valentine’s Day was a TV and an entertainment center,” she said. “The worst gift is that this year I have to work on Valentine’s, and I still have not told the guy I made plans with yet.” Some surprises, however, don’t always turn out as planned. Julie Crenwelge, a freshman chemical engineering major, said she knows firsthand the disappointment of receiving an unpleasant surprise. “One time a guy gave me a kitten for Valentine’s,” she said. “I love animals and it was a nice try, but you would think after six months he would have remembered that I am allergic to cats. I had to give it back to him or else 1 would have been pretty sick.” Other gifts, however, show neither creativity nor effort. Shannon Youngblood, a junior education major, said she was less than impressed when she received nothing more than a greeting card from her valentine. “One time all 1 got was a cheesy card, which did not show much GRAPHICS BY RUBEN DELUNA • THE BATTALION effort on his part,” she said. “It was neither sincere or personal.” For every bad gift-receiver, however, exists a bad gift-giver. Mary Ann Ferguson, a sophomore business administration major, said she gave her Valentine’s date a rude awakening. Ferguson said after she received a dozen roses, a talking frog stuffed animal, and some chocolates from her boyfriend, she promptly dumped him. “I had never received anything for Valentine’s before, so 1 was just holding out for the presents,” she said. “Our relationship wasn’t working out anyway.” Let's Co Out To Eat Thursdays in The Battalion Warm, Fresh CooKies Delivered to Your Door $1 off any cooKie delivery order Cookie Varieties: Chocolate Chip.
