THE BATTALION
By Sommer Bunce
THE BATTALION
For Sandy and Danny fans who have
only seen the 1978 film version of the
Broadway hit “Grease,” sitting in a theatre
with the stiletto-wearing, greasy-haired cast
of MSC Opas’ “Grease” is more heavenly
than “that malt shop in the sky.”
The lights, the voices and the characters
come to life on stage, with minor variations
from the Olivia Newton John and John
Travolta flick. But unlike the movie, this
“Grease” snaps with an energy you can't
find in the VCR. Picture Teen Angel (who
replaces Frankie Avalon’s role from the
film) swooning to a beehived Frenchy
about heading back to high school as smok
ers pump out clouds and showgirls wearing
stars for hats dance in unison. “Greased
Lightnin’” pits a gyrating Kenickie against
a backdrop of black leather dancers, and
“Hopelessly Devoted to You” strikes a
chord as Sandy, played by Estonian-born
Hanna-Liina Vosa, swears out her love on
the lip of the stage with only a blue back
ground for support.
Sandy’s transformation is as vivid as fans
will remember, as Vosa’s voice leaves the soft
ness behind and cranks up the volume to
become Danny’s rock-n’-Toll goddess in
“You’re the One That 1 Want.” Jamey Isenor is
sensational as Danny, the frustrated teen in
love with a woman from another clique.
“Alone at the Drive-In Movie” replaces the
film version’s “Stranded at the Drive-In,” but
Isenor’s act is worth it. Filled with hair-comb
ing, cigarettes, and 1950s classic be-bops,
“Grease” is a show to see, even if you’ve
already got the words to the songs memorized.
Doing “The Hand Jive” with a theatre full
of Aggies and the cast leading is an experi
ence that can’t be missed.
“Grease” will be performed
tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Rudder
Theater. Tickets can be pur
chased at the Box Office or by
calling (979) 845-1234.

PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
Pepsi to make multi-million dollar
donation to hip-hop mogul
NEW YORK (AP) — Pepsi agreed to make
a donation to the foundation of a rapper
whose ad the company yanked, averting a
boycott threatened by hip-hop mogul
Russell Simmons.
The agreement calls for Pepsi to make a
multi-million dollar donation over several
years to the Ludicris Foundation,
Simmons' Hip-Hop Summit Action
Network said in a statement.
The agreement was reached Monday
night, and the amount of the donation and
the length of time were still being worked
out, spokeswoman Jody Miller said. She
said the boycott had been called off.
"We've come to an agreement where the
common ground is young people," Pepsi
spokesman Larry Jabbonsky said in a
statement. "We're working together on a
multiyear, multi-city effort that will encour
age kids to express their creativity in the
visual and performing arts."
He would not comment on specifics of
the agreement.
Pepsi pulled the ad featuring the rapper
Ludacris in August, a day after Fox News
Channel's Bill O'Reilly ran a segment criti
cizing the company for using the rapper
and criticizing some of his lyrics.
Ludacris is on the Def Jam label, which
Simmons founded. His 2001 album "Word
of Mouf" includes the song "Move Bitch,”
one of his biggest hits.
Last week, Simmons threatened a boy
cott of Pepsi and its subsidiaries to begin
Wednesday unless the company ran the
ad and donated $5 million to Ludacris'
foundation.
There was no indication the ad would be
placed back on the air. Neither Pepsi or
the Hip-Hop Network would comment on
the ad's status.
Too bad they don't make
one for your heart.
