Tuition
Continued from page 1
“Just about every state oul
there, except for a couple, is deal
ing with significant budgets short
ages,” said Julie Bell, the educa
tion program director with the
National Conference of State
Legislators. “And almost every
state is looking at higher educa
tion either through a budget cut or
a tuition increase.”
Of course, the specific finan
cial picture for education varies
from state to state. Overall, the
College Board found that students
at public four-year colleges this
year paid an average of $9,663 for
tuition, fees, room and board.
For many students, staying
home to attend more-affordable
community colleges is the alter
native to covering tuition increas
es with student loans.

sharpen their judgment ” he said.
Noack said the meetings would help
both groups determine how the incident
was misinterpreted.
“I think we’ll both go away feeling we
understand each other,” Noack said.
Rev. Danita Noland, who spoke at the
vigil and complained about the cadets’
actions to Van Alstyne, could not be
reached for comment Tuesday.
Some of the anti-war protestors had
accused the cadets of deliberately disrupt
ing the peace vigil with loud drill chants
and marching formations, and that a few of
the cadets had pointed their ceremonial
rifles in the direction of the protestors.
They also alleged that at one point, the
cadets huddled and one of the unit’s leaders
made negative comments about the protest
in his address.
But Van Alstyne said the Ross Volunteer
commander spoke to the unit according to
normal operating procedure, and simply
asked them to take pride in their organiza
tion, reminding them that many Aggies
serving in the military around the world
were demonstrating the same pride that he
was encouraging in the company. The Ross
Volunteer commander did not discuss the
protestors. Van Alstyne said.
The Ross Volunteers, one of the Corps'
elite units, serve as the honor guard for the
governor of Texas.
About 150 cadets are members of the
company, which performs the 21-guii-
salute at Silver Taps and Muster.
