UEB WATCH
www.taxsites.com/federal
Between now and April 15, tax returns
will be at the front of most working stu
dents’ minds.
What will it be this year? End up
owing? Boo! Refund? Yay!
Either way, when it comes to income
taxes, the law can get rather tricky.
www.taxsites.com/federal.html tries to
explain all the federal tax laws as thoroughly
as possible. The Web site discusses dozens
of tax topics, has full details on tax legisla
tion and court decisions, and even discusses
Internal Revenue Service Codes. Any ques
tion about taxes can probably be answered
on one of the many pages of this site.
The problem will be finding the answers.
Links lead to more links, which lead to
more links, which often lead to other Web
sites. It gets so ridiculous that the frustration
that led users to the site in the first place is
quickly multiplied. The Web site is one that
is probably good for the tax professional,
but the average American who just wants to
know a little more about tax laws would be
best advised to stay away. It all gets a little
too confusing.
mood for the night or their perfect work
out. And, as if it’s not enough to learn
which Friends characters they most resem
ble, users can take a personality test and be
matched with someone who has similar
interests. Emode also provides advice on
improving careers, personalities or rela
tionships through Emode’s Ph.D. certified
self-improvement programs. The Web site
says its purpose is to be “entertaining, sim
ple and...meaningful.” A few tests may be
entertaining, but to say that it is meaning
ful may be stretching it for a Web site that
boasts tests such as “What breed of dog are
you?” and “Who’s your inner rock star?”
Jumbled amongst finding your comfort
cocktail and your psychic strength, you
might find a few tests that actually give
you information you can work with, such
as your best quality or your career person
ality. But it is hard to take those seriously
on a Web site that will tell you what kind
of kisser you are.

For those who have ever wondered what
kind of monkey they are or what their alter
ego is, there is www.emode.com. Claiming
to be the number one destination for “self-
discovery,” this Web site offers a variety of
personality, relationship, health, pop cul
ture, identity and career tests that will
determine such things as a user’s movie
It’s the night before the test and noth

tion to this all-too-common scenario. At
the click of the mouse lies the explana

involved in abnormal psychology and the
properties of chemical bonds.
More than just a study guide,
www.sparknotes.com offers reference
tools, such as a thesaurus and dictionary,
and research materials for even the most

classic books online from the Web site or
work to raise their test scores through a
prep course. The Web site also has a mes
sage board where users can communicate
with others as well and post some of their
own work. The search engine allows users
to search the entire site to match what they
are looking for from all divisions.
With more than 1,000 study guides on
the most popular educational Web site in
the world, www.sparknotes.com allows
you free online access to plot summaries,
content analysis and practice questions for
literature, American and European history,
algebra, geometry and calculus lessons

subjects offered. It is as simple as creating
a log-in name to sign on under. The site is
easy to navigate even for the most basic
users. While it may not be the kind of site
to surf for hours on end, it is the kind of
site that just may make life safer the night
before the biology test.
