ruling.”
INS prosecutor Heidi
Graham agreed with the judge’s
decision, saying: “Had we
known about what he calls his
misguided thinking, we would
never have issued him a visa.”
Aletwei was arrested Jan. 31
and charged with violating pro
visions of the Immigration and
Nationality Act.
Violators are subject to
deportation. Officials with the
FBI and the INS in Dallas
would not comment on the case
or say what led them to Aletwei.
“He’s a peculiar case, 1 have
to admit. I haven’t heard of one
like that, and I’ve been in the
business for 35 years,” former
FBI Associate Deputy Director
Oliver “Buck” Revell told The
Dallas Morning News in its
Saturday editions.
During his hearing, in which
Aletwei waived his right to an
attorney and represented him
self in court, the issue of mental
competency was not raised.
Many of Aletwei’s comments
heard by the judge were made
earlier during questioning with
the FBI.
At one point during FBI
questioning, Aletwei said he
was involved in terrorism and
that his desire to become a
martyr was sown in his home
country.
“In my mind, I was doing a
noble thing,” he told the judge.
Aletwei said he disclosed his
thoughts to the FBI as a show of
good faith and a way to help
them deal with terrorism.
“I want people to under
stand just how we think
because if they understand how
we think, they can prevent
accidents like 9-11. I don’t
believe war or violence can
solve anything,” he said.
One of Aletwei’s teachers at
UTA said he was shocked to
hear about his student’s given-
testimony.
Arthur Reyes, an assistant
professor of computer science at
UTA, said Aletwei had com
plained in recent months of gov
ernment harassment and the rev
ocation of his student visa by
the U.S. Embassy in Jordan, but
rarely spoke of politics and
seemed well-balanced.
“There’s nothing in his char
acter that would indicate any
truth to that at all,” Reyes said.
“That doesn’t sound like the
Tahir that we know.”
