Tough competition
awaits tennis team
By Blake Kimzey
THE BATTALION
The Texas A&M women’s
tennis team will be missing in
action in Bryan-College Station
for the second weekend in a
row. The Aggies will fly to
Wisconsin to compete in the
16th annual USTA-ITA
Women’s National Team
Indoor Championship, round
ing out a field of 16 teams. In
only the second week of the
season, brackets and seeding
are already hot topics.
The Aggies
are heading into
this weekend’s
tournament
after a brief
jekyll-and-hyde
tour against two
Big 12 teams
that initiated
February play.
In its season
opener last
weekend. A&M
was able to
sidestep an
early test from
a young and
inexperienced Iowa State team
that fell to the Aggies, 6-1.
The following day, the
Aggies wielded their rackets
against the Missouri Tigers and
lost for the first time in their
last nine meetings, 5-2.
“To beat teams, you have to
take advantage of opportunities
when they are given,” said
A&M Head Coach Bobby
Kleinecke. “We are a young
team, and that is one area
where we must improve.”
The Aggies stand even in
the Big 12 standings at 1-1.
Coach Kleinecke gave the
team Monday off to catch up
on rest and schoolwork before
its only day of practice on
Tuesday. Wednesday marks the
Aggies’ exodus after a brief
two-day stay in Texas.
“This tournament will be a
great opportunity for us, but the
challenge will be extremely
tough,” Kleinecke said. “It will
be a big test for us, so we must
improve and learn from our
mistakes.”
When compe
tition starts
Thursday, finding
hard-hitting oppo
sition shouldn’t
be a problem.

eight teams in the
nation will be in

ing to make their
mark in early sea

play.
The A&M
coaching staff
was betting on a first-round
opponent nationally ranked in
the top five.
“If we have to play someone
in the top five, (University of
North Carolina) is who we
want to face,” said Assistant
Coach Alison Ojeda. “We’re
looking forward to getting a

Women's tennis Head Coach
Ags to host OU in effort
to break five-game skid
By Troy Miller
THE BATTALION
While the Texas A&M men’s
basketball team climbs up the
Big 12 standings, the women’s
team seems to be going in the
opposite direction.
It won’t get easier for the
Aggies (8-10, 1-6 Big 12) as
they face No. 24 Oklahoma
Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at
Reed Arena.
Oklahoma (13-7,4-3) is com
ing off a two-game losing skid
in its past week of play. The
Sooners lost to Texas at home
before being blown out at home
by No. 5 Kansas State 74-45.
“It is partly youth and partly
the rigors of the Big 12,” said
OU Head Coach Sherri Coale
about her team’s lack of offen
sive production. “Partly not hav
ing a leader, not having senior
leadership anywhere.”
Oklahoma has shot just 28.2
percent from the field in its past
two games.
The Aggies hope to capitalize
on the Sooner’s offensive woes
to get out of their own five-game
losing streak.
In a 76-50 loss to Texas in
Austin Sunday, the Aggies
showed signs of life. After falling
behind 10-0 to begin the game,
the Aggies stayed close until
halftime. Despite trailing for the
entire game, the Aggies contin
ued to fight back, cutting the lead
to 10 on two separate occasions.
"I thought we came out and
fought,” said A&M Head Coach
Peggie Gillom. “My hat’s off to
my kids. They are fighters. I’m
proud of them for fighting.”
If the Aggies are going to
turn their season around, they
will have to rely heavily on
junior guard Toccara Williams.
Williams scored 14 points
against Texas and leads the
team, averaging 13.1 points per
game. She is also tied with Lisa
Branch for A&M’s all-time
steals record with 309.
Williams leads the nation
with 5.0 steals per game.
Despite the steals Williams
contributes to the Aggies, A&M
averages 20.6 turnovers per
game. If the Aggies turn the ball
over, the Sooners have a balanced
team that could take advantage of
the scoring opportunities.
The Sooners have four play
ers averaging double figures in
scoring. Junior guard Maria
Villarroel leads the way with
15.6 points per game.
To pull the upset, the Aggies
must stop Villarroel from attack
ing the basket, and Gillom
believes the Aggies are finally
moving in the right direction.
“We are doing everything we
can on and off the court,”
Gillom said. “Our goal is to win
every possible game we can at
home and on the road.”
