Aaron Lines
Living Out Loud
RCA Records
The buzz about Aaron Lines began when be
entered country radio with the hit single “You
Can’t Hide Beautiful.” Lines’ smooth, clear voice
and heartfelt lyrics caught the attention of program
directors and country music fans alike.
His debut album “Living Out Loud” was
released with much anticipation, but what his new
fans will find is 11 songs that all sound similar.
Every track contains uplifting ballads about love
complete with gentle musical accompaniment.
Although it is a feel-good album that allows Lines
to prove himself a talented ballad writer, there is
just too much of the same thing. Having written
eight of the 11 songs on the album, including the
title track, he also proves that his songwriting abili
ties are top-notch.
But this leaves the album lacking the faster
songs often needed to break up the monotony
of the ballads. At times, the listener wants noth
ing more than one good rocking song to give a
little variety.
Lines comes close to filling that need with the
final track, “You Get the Picture.” However, it
comes a little too late in the album to be of much
consequence.

Norah Jones
Come Away With Me
Blue Note Records
With her debut album, 22-year-old Dallas native
Norah Jones invites us to join her on what will
hopefully be a long, distinguished career in popular
music.
A single listen and one would agree that Jones’
five Grammy nominations are well-deserved.
“Come Away with Me” is an impressive debut
that features mainly radio-friendly jazz with some
hints of country. Jones employs an incredibly sul
try and unique voice to produce equally com
pelling songs.
Every track is a vignette of jazz perfection.
Jones wrote or co-wrote three of the album's songs
but makes all 14 tracks her own — especially her
cover of the Hank Williams classic “Cold Cold
Heart.”
This CD is perfect for a low-key gathering with
friends or for winding down after a long day. Just
like the music video for “Don't Know Why,” listen
ers can almost see the roll of the tide and feel the
sand beneath their feet as Jones works her magic.
Norah Jones’ success is a testament to the
power of word-of-mouth and MTV. Had people
not shared their knowledge of the unknown artist
with friends or had her video not been cycled into
heavy rotation on the music network, radio never
would have given her a chance. But luckily, she
broke through.
This young talent is poised to influence music
in the way artists such as Joni Mitchell, Cyndi
Lauper and Sarah McLachlan have in past decades.

Martha's Music
For all intents amd purposes, grunge is
The genre is to music what Sanskrit is to I
guages. Former Smashing Pumpkins frontmai
Billy Corgan is well aware of this.
Unfortunately, the Pumpkins flourished i
the early to mid ‘90s, when grunge was the
popular sound.
Because of this, Corgan and Co. were stud
with that label until it finally disbanded. Aft
“Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness,” the
Smashing Pumpkins’ most successful album,
fans were treated with the experimental
“Adore” and the more aggressive "Machina:
The Machines of Gods.” Something wasn’t
right, though. After highly publicized feuds
with Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love ant
repeated arguments with his record label,
Corgan became unhappy with fame, and it
showed in his work.
Enter Zwan. Corgan teams up with ex-
Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, ex-A
Perfect Circle bassist Paz Lenchantin, and gui
tarists David Pajo and Matt Sweeney to fomn|
new group free of any kind of musical label
With the debut album "Mary Star of The Sea,”
Zwan features Corgan’s catchy songwriting ai
guitar licks along with fresh new musicians
whose energy reflects well on the record.
Although Mary Star isn’t too far removed
from what the Pumpkins did earlier in their
career, it experiments with different sounds.
The final track “Come With Me” (different
from the Puff Daddy song) is an upbeat
acoustic song, complete with a harmonica le;
something the Pumpkins would never have
been able to pull off. The first single
“Honestly” is another upbeat number with a
catchy melody that is sure tq please even the
most hard-core Pumpkins fans.
In short, Zwan is essentially a fresh Billy
Corgan without the pressure of being in one of
the biggest bands in the past 10 years. The
album “Mary Star of The Sea” will gain new
fans and satisfy loyal Pumpkins lovers.
