Smith said. “The night before
the show was filmed we all
went to a Vietnamese-Mexican
restaurant and (the other con
testants) were all drinking mai
tais. I was afraid I’d have a
hangover on the show, so I
didn’t drink anything.”
Smith, who appeared third
in the contestant lineup, said
appearing on the program gave
him the opportunity to display
his Aggie spirit.
“For my intro, I did my
wildcat and the pass-back,
which some people might not
understand if they’re not from
A&M,” Smith said.
Sitting in the hot seat across
from “Millionaire” host
Meredith Vieira, Smith
answered questions concerning
such varied topics as Brigham
Young University, “The
Sopranos” and the Big Bang
theory.
The question that ended
Smith’s round focused on the
garage band, The Hives.
Now back at A&M, Smith’s
vast knowledge of trivia is not
wasted.
“He is always helping me
with my homework,” said Sean
Conner, a sophomore civil engi
neering major. “Scott’s pretty
much one of the smartest guys I
know.”
Marcos Rosales, a sopho
more chemical engineering
major and Smith’s roommate
said the more time he spends
with Smith, the more he realizes
how knowledgeable he really is.
“Once, I played Trivial
Pursuit and it was Scott and me
against his whole family,” he
said. “We beat them in two turns
because of Scott.”
Rosales said Smith’s intellect
is helpful on an everyday level
as well.
“Whenever I’m reading or
doing anything l don’t under
stand, I just ask Scott. He’s bet
ter than a dictionary, and he
always knows the answer,”
he said.
For Smith, watching himself
compete for $l million on
national television is just the
beginning.
“Being on ‘Who Wants to be
a Millionaire’ was eerie and
unreal, but a lot of fun,” Smith
said. “I’m thinking Jeopardy is
next.”

Finding a vessel such as the
Western Empire in the Gulf of
Mexico is not a rare occurrence,
said Dr. Bill Bryant, A&M pro
fessor of oceanography.
Thousands of ships of all sizes
have gone down in the gulf dur
ing the years, he said.
Researchers discovered the
Western Empire when they were
heading back to shore following
an exploration of a ship called the
Mica.
Two years ago, employees of
an oil company working on an
undersea pipe came across the
Mica, and from this chance
encounter came a research proj
ect made possible by a $250,000
backing from Exxon Mobil.
A synergy between archeolo
gy and oceanography must be
achieved to uncover all the mys
teries behind ships such as the
Mica and the Western Empire,
Phanuef said. It is a process of
knowing when the ship sank, and
how the wreck occurred and
inferring what was going on in
the ocean at that time.
Oil companies have compiled
a list of nearly 300 ships that have
gone down in the Gulf of Mexico,
and these are just two of those,
leaving many more discoveries
for oceanographers as well as
nautical archeologists, who have
also taken interest in the study of
these ships’ remains.
“The Gulf of Mexico holds the
largest collection of deep-sea
ships that have not yet been dis
covered, and we hope to head
back down there as soon as the
funds allow,” Phaneuf said.
