THE BATTALION
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Women's basketball
team falls to Texas
The Texas A&M women’s
basketball team recorded its
fifth consecutive loss versus the
No. 11 University of Texas
Longhorns on Sunday.
Kala Bowers and Heather
Shrieber led Texas to a 76-50
victory. Bowers was dominant,
scoring 22 points in the game.
Shrieber added a double-dou
ble, putting up 14 points and
15 rebounds.
The Aggies were led by
Toccara Williams’ six steals,
which tied the Texas A&M
career record for takeaways.
Williams also added a team-
high 14 points.
The Longhorns began the
game on a 10-0 run and contin
ued to build on the lead
throughout the game. A&M
was unable to get within 10
points of Texas after 1:02
remained in the first half.
The Aggies' next game will be
at home versus Oklahoma. Tip-
off is scheduled for Wednesday at

AFC wins Pro Bowl
By Greg Beacham
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HONOLULU — Ricky
Williams’ first trip to the Pro
Bowl was worth the wait.
The Miami Dolphins’ run
ning back rushed for 56 yards,
scored two touchdowns and
forced a fumble on special
teams to earn the MVP award in
the AFC’s 45-20 victory over
the NFC on Sunday.
The AFC had six intercep
tions while beating the NFC for
its sixth victory in the last seven
Pro Bowls.
Williams also caught three
passes as the AFC jumped to a
28-6 halftime lead.
“What’s fun is how laid-
back everything is,” Williams
said. “It's always great to get in
the end zone, but it’s especially
great to do it against the best
players in the world with mil
lions of people watching.”
Williams got the AFC off to
a fast start. After Miami team
mate Jason Taylor intercepted
Jeff Garcia’s pass near midfield
on the opening possession,
Williams broke an 18-yard run
on the AFC’s first offensive
play before scoring easily three
plays later.
Garcia, making his first Pro
Bowl start, threw three intercep
tions in the first 17 minutes.
Philadelphia’s David Akers
set a Pro Bowl record by kick
ing a 53-yard field goal
against a strong crosswind in
the second quarter.
There was even a shoving
match, something rarely seen in
the friendly exhibition. San
Francisco center Jeremy
Newbeny got a personal foul for
shoving New England’s Richard
Seymour in the face during the
final minute of the first half
On the final play of the half,
Oakland’s Rod Woodson inter
cepted McNabb's pass near the
goal line and started a return
featuring several laterals, a
fumble — and at least one ille
gal forward pass, negating it
all. The return stretched 97
yards before Taylor flopped
into the end zone for a touch
down that didn't count.

SUNRISE, Fla. — Dany Heatley did some
thing that’s almost impossible to do in an exhibi
tion like the NHL All-Star game — he made it
dramatic and exciting.
Heatley, a not-so-well known star from a last-
place team playing in his first All-Star game, joined
hockey greats such as Wayne Gretzky and Mario
Lemieux by scoring a record-tying four goals
Sunday, though he couldn't prevent the Western
Conference from beating th& East in the first All-
Star shootout in NHL history.
After a 5-all regulation tie set up the fourth over
time All-Star game, the West won 6-5 when Markus
Naslund, Bill Guerin and Paul Kariya scored in the
shootout against goalie Patrick Lalime. Only
Heatley — of course — scored for the East against
plie Marty Turco.
Though Heatley put the puck in the net five
Mthe NHL announced several minutes after the
-pme he would be credited only with four goals —
the fifth player to do so.
Heatley, a 22-year-old overshadowed at times on
llis own Atlanta Thrashers team by Ilya Kovalchuk,
matched Gretzky (1983), Lemieux (1990), Vincent
Damphousse (1991) and Mike Gartner (1993) as the
only players in the All-Star game’s 53-year history
with four goals.
After getting his fourth goal with six minutes still
remaining in the second period, Heatley flashed a
typical hockey player’s missing-tooth grin, then
spent the rest of the fast-moving and relatively low-
scoring game trying to get his record fifth goal.
His linemates, who usually included home-ice
star Dili Jokinen of Florida and Washington’s
Tech ,

Knight dunk right there.”
King, who scored a game-high 18 points, said that after
Wright’s dunk, he knew A&M would win the game.
“I almost turned a flip,” King said. “I thought he was going
to lay it up, but he dunked it. I almost ran off the court because
it felt like the game was over. (The dunk) should be on (ESPN)
Sports Center.”
Wright has now scored in double digits in his last 16 out
ings, and finishing the game Saturday with 15 points and 10
rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
Knight’s next chance to reach 800 wins will come on
Wednesday night in Lubbock against Nebraska. Knight trails
Dean Smith of North Carolina (879), Adolph Rupp of
Kentucky (876) and Jim Phelan of Mount St. Mary’s, Md.
(826), who are the only three coaches in Division 1 history to
reach the 800-win plateau.
Jaromir Jagr. tried to get it for him too, repeatedly
giving him the puck every time he hit the ice.
The relatively quiet fans in Office Depot
Center began to realize what was happening, too,
and picked up the noise level whenever he
touched the puck.
He didn’t get that fifth goal in regulation, but he
did set up Jokinen’s first career All-Star goal mid
way through the third period. Jokinen, a late addi
tion to the game when Lemieux pulled out last week
with a sore groin, also had a memorable debut with
a goal and three assists.
Heatley’s' big game came only one year after he
played in the Young Stars game, held the night
before the All-Star game.
Fittingly enough, his big game highlighted an
afternoon in which the NHL’s young stars — for a
change — truly did overshadow the traditional
names such as Roy, Roenick, Lidstrom, Forsberg
and Jagr.
Marian Gaborik, who at 20 is nearly two years
younger than Heatley, had a goal and two assists to
lead the West’s first victory in the All-Star game
since 1992 — when it was still known as the
Campbell Conference.
There were some impressive efforts in net,
though, especially considering the All-Star score
was 14-12 with a World vs. North America fonnat
two years ago. Martin Brodeur of New Jersey
allowed only a goal and Lalime and Turco gave up
only a goal each until the shootout.
And the old-timers weren't entirely left out,
either — the 39-year-old AI Maclnnis also scored
for the West in his first All-Star appearance in three
years, as did longtime stars Mike Modano of Dallas
and Peter Forsberg of Colorado. Jagralso had two
assists for the East.
