Make no mistake, Jay-Z is at his womaniz ing, pistol-toting, substance-abusing best, but it is the album’s overabundance of sampling and prevalence of rushed beats that at times give it a cluttered sound. Never is this heavy-handed sampling more apparent than on the album's first track, “A Dream,” in which nearly half of the song is Notorious B.I.G. singing “Juicy.” Though a very good song, “Juicy” belongs on B.I.G.'s album “Ready to Die,” not on “The Blueprint 2.” Jay-Z has not lost his egotistical edge, how ever, spending much of the album hyping him self as the Christ-like figure “Jayhova.” His lyrics are witty and depressing. "03 Bonnie & Clyde,” featuring Beyonce Knowles of Destiny’s Child, is a solid song in spite of being a blatant rip-off of Tupac Shakur’s “Me and My Girlfriend” and “Excuse Me Miss” is also a strong song because of Jay-Z’s openess about his sexual prowess. Though not warranting two discs, “The Blueprint 2” marks another fine effort from Jay- Z. But for Jay-Z to be truly successful, he should stop bogging down his albums with stolen songs and obligatory cheap shots at rival rapper Nas. zenith, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” For a band that has influenced modern artists from across all genres, the greatest hits CD from Nirvana comes dangerously close to the tangem of disappointment. Most of the tracks on theCD can be found on other albums, thus lowering the incentive of any fan who already has the albums It looks past their b-sides, songs not playedot the radio, and other songs that weren’t killedbv excessive radio play. This album would be a good recommendation for those who wishtobe mainstream savvy, or the hard-edge fans who want to support the cause of Nirvana. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time. -Nishat Falim 'uTw’ The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" Warner Bros. ☆ ieorge Deutsch Nirvana "Nirvana" Gessen Records Music fans who have been gritting their teeth with anticipation will finally be satisfied with the release of the new album from the most influen tial, yet commercialized, grunge band of the 1990s. Nirvana’s greatest hits compilation CD turns out to be a stew of garage rock and early 90s punk, with 14 tracks from Nirvana’s career. All of the unreleased material that Dave Grohl and Courtney Love so viciously fought for seems to have completely missed the playlist, with the only new track on the album being “You Know You're Right.” Unfortunately, the track sounds like a sloppy filler song and probably wasn’t what Nirvana fans had antici pated. Even with Kurt Cobain’s vocal efforts, most of the lyrics are absolutely incoherent. “In Utero” seems to be the winning album, with five tracks taken from its play list, includ ing the mellow track “Heart-Shaped Box.” Three tracks from Nirvana’s biggest album “Nevermind” also grace the back cover, includ ing the track that has become pop culture’s The test begins with The Flaming Lips latest effort, "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots."it? follow-up to I999’s critically-acclaimed souk masterpiece, "The Soft Bulletin.” With its ne# album, the Oklahoma City trio attempts to ere ate a more commercial-friendly album than it previous releases. What results is a record ful of radio-friendly, amazingly artistic songs tha: will not disappoint critics or casual listeners The band's eclectic mix of synthesizers, druu tracks and samples compliment frontmar, Wayne Coyne’s unique tenor voice to create; sound that is both ground-breaking and beauti ful. The album is also successful at takingdit ferent types of songs and making them wort together. The opening track, “Fight Test/’isar addictive song with a quirky bass line an: catchy melody. The first single, "Do Yo; Realize,” compacts the group’s trademari sound into a short, collective package offers the listener an uplifting alternative totts mall-punk and nu-metal that usually saturate- the airwaves. The Flaming Lips has always taken at alternative approach to studio work. After gain ing critical acclaim with its two previous recordings.
