More than 200 students gathered around actor and former
teen idol Kirk Cameron as he spoke about his Christian faith
on campus at the Lawrence Sullivan Ross statue in front of
the Academic Building on Friday. Cameron, best known for
his role in the 1980s sitcom "Growing Pains," also stars in the
movies based on the Christian-genre "Left Behind" series.
Daughters of Confederacy fights for battle flag
TYLER (AP) — A local chapter of the
United Daughters of the Confederacy
(UDC) and the Smith County Historical
Society are wrapped up in legal battle over
the rights to an 1863 Confederate battle flag.
Both groups claim the rights to the 17th
Texas Cavalry flag, one of two Confederate
banners restored by Tyler historian Mike
Sabota.
The flag was donated in Smith County by
Col. C.E. Parker to the UDC. But Historical
Society members claim Parker’s donation
came with a caveat: that the UDC place the
flag in an Austin museum.
“That never happened, so he reclaimed it
and gave it to the Historical Society in 1963
or ’62,” Historical Society president Randy
Gilbert said in Sunday editions of the Tyler
Morning Telegraph.
But Charles Herbst, husband of local
UDC president Maxine Herbst, calls the
lawsuit “ridiculous” and said it’s recorded
that the Colonel donated the “Parker Flag”
in 1923 to the local UDC chapter.
“It’s in the meeting minutes so there is
no reason for it to be sued about,” said
Charles Herbst, also named as a defendant
in the suit, pending in county court at law.
“This is an absolute waste of time.”
The Parker Flag and the other Civil War
Hag were displayed at the Historical Socip
museum near downtown Tyler
November 20(X), when Sabota reclaimedili
flags for the UDC to restore them.
The two flags are at Sabota’s antebelliE
style home south of Tyler. He also is nw
as a defendant in the lawsuit.
“I’m a historian and collector, and hi 1
them deteriorating a long time ago,” Sate
said. “They were in horrible shape.”
He said Maxine Herbst, who *
unavailable for comment, contacted himf*
years ago and he retrieved the flags fronuii
museum, then took them to New Orleans^
restoration.

Swastikas appear at Austin synagogue
AUSTIN (AP) — Vandalism
at a Jewish synagogue has mem
bers worrying about anti-
Semitism.
Kol Halev, a nondenomina-
tional Jewish congregation in
Northwest Austin, became the
first Austin synagogue in recent
memory to have its front doors
spray-painted with swastikas.
The symbols were removed
but the fears and emotions they
aroused among the synagogue’s
180 families will take longer to
expunge.
“The greatest fear of Jewish
leaders is that what people claim
is anti-Israel sentiment is really
anti-Semitism,” said Mark Lit,
chief executive officer of the
Jewish Community Association
of Austin. “There’s certainly
been more anti-Semitism world
wide since 9/1 1.”
The vandalism occurred on
the Martin Luther King Jr.
national holiday.
It was the second such inci
dent in a few months since a
Jewish family’s home near the
Dell Jewish Community Center
in Northwest Austin was daubed
with the Nazi emblem.
