Call ON CAMPUS INTERVIEWS TODAY!!! 10a.m. - 5p.m, MSC Foyer Pine Cove Christian Camps Tyler, TX Columbus, TX King Continued from page IB Vernita King would make the five-hour drive from Gibsland to College Station for a 7 p.m. game that same night and then turn around the next morning to head home for work the next night. “My momma’s great,” Bernard King said. “There is something about her being (at the games), just seeing her there makes me feel better.” While King knew it would be an uphill climb to rebuild the pro gram at A&M, he said it has been disappointing for him at times. “It’s been tough times but it’s also been good times,” King said. “Being here has taught me a lot as a person and has made me grow as a man.” Vernita King said there have been times when she told King that he had other choices, but he always chose to stay at A&M. “He has been discouraged because there has been a lot of disappointment,” she said. "But that’s part of growing up; that’s part of life.” Even though the Aggies have struggled during his four years at A&M, King is approaching an impressive individual milestone. King needs just 28 points to become A&M's all-time leading scorer and just 80 points to become the Big 12 all-time leader. While excited about breaking the record. King said he would still rather have his team reach postseason play. Tennis Continued from page IB “Individually it means a lot,” King said. “As a player you always try to be the best at what you do, but I don't think I’ve left my mark here yet. 1 want to have one year as a winner. I don’t care about the rest of the stuff. I just want to win and leave my mark as one of the best players to come through here.” King said that he doesn’t care which game he breaks the record in, but he does hope it happens at home so that his family and his fans can be there to share in the achievement. While he may or may not lead the Aggies to the postseason this year. King has left his mark on the younger players, including freshman guard Antoine Wright. Wright said that when Watkins was trying to recruit him to play for A&M, King was the first person he wanted to talk to. “A lot of times when you are being recruited, you really don't get to meet the players,” Wright said. “I wanted to talk to Bernard and see how he felt about things. Our goals are simple: to be in the postseason.” Watkins said that King not only helped recruit Wright, but has always been there to support the younger guys on the team, during recruiting and once the “new guys” arrive on campus. “That's something you always want, for your upperclassmen to embrace the new kids.” Watkins said. "Bernard has been more than helpful in that area, not only with Antoine but with all the kids. He likes to think that he is taking them under his wing.” have all put good programs together. What better level to win at than at the top?” Preseason polls have A&M sitting once again at third place behind Baylor and Texas. “Only two guys are stepping in and playing as freshmen.” Madden said. “So as far as leadership I look to these guys who have been around the block to lead them. One-third of the team has never seen a dual match season.” This weekend, the Aggies will look to sophomores Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic for leadership. The two head into the match ranked No. 5 among doubles pairs nationally, fresh off of a strong performance at the Rice Invitational this past week. The pair man aged to reach the doubles finals only to fall to top-ranked Rice. Competition will begin Saturday when the Aggies take on the Islanders from A&M Corpus-Christi at 10 a.m. Track Continued from page IB Junior Jerry Harris accounted for one provisional mark after winning the 60-meter dash. He later anchored the men’s 4x440-yard relay team that won TCU a gold medal and another provisional mark. No. 8 Rice University and No. 4 University of Texas will be among the top women’s track and field teams awaiting the Aggie Women in Houston on Saturday. Leading the way for the Lady Longhorns in Houston last week was freshman standout Sanya Richards, who garnered the “Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week” honor by finishing top among collegiate competi tors in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter run. The University of Houston will host teams from across Texas and the Southeastern United States, including Texas, Rice, Southwest Texas State University, Texas Southern University, TCU, UT Pan American, New Orleans, Southern Baton Rouge and South Alabama. The Houston Indoor Opener is scheduled to begin this Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Need a New Creative Outlet? lose the air guitar and learn how to play for real Complete listing of classes at uplus.tamu.edu.
