University of Texas Longhorns. No. 5 UT defeated the Aggies 196-104 in the meet.
UT beats women’s swimming;
men’s team wins on Saturday
By Jeff Allen
THE BATTALION
The No. 23 Texas A&M
women’s swimming and diving
team members knew that an
upset of national power No. 5
University of Texas wasn't
going to come easily on
Sunday, even in their home
pool at the Student Rec Center
Natatorium.
As it turned out, they were
right. The Longhorns (4-3) car
ried 14 of the 16 events to
defeat the Aggies 196-104.
Despite the lopsided score,
the meet wasn’t a story of total
domination. The Aggie women
(7-3) claimed I 1 second place
finishes, as well as both dis
tance swims, the 1,000 meter
and 500 meter freestyle.
Freshman Paty Villareal won
the 1,000, while teammate
freshman Katie Francher swam
a personal season best 4:56.26
to claim the 500.
Despite the women’s loss to
Texas, the weekend was not a
total wash for the A&M swim
ming and diving programs.
Both the men and women were
able to defend their home pool
on Saturday with solid victo
ries against Louisiana State
University, with the added
bonus of a resounding victory
for the women against Rice.
“We were really excited after
last year’s close meet (against
LSU),” said sophomore Ashley
Roark. “It was exciting that we
stepped up and it went really
well...and that we got close to
our best time already, especial
ly just coming back off our
training trip.”
Much of the women’s suc
cess can be attributed to a quick
start, jumping out to an early
lead against LSU (4-4) and
Rice (2-3) by claiming both the
top two spots in the first event,
the 200-medley relay.
“That was big,” said women’s
head coach Steve Bultman. “We
talked about how big the relay
would be and we knew that it
was a relay we could win. We
also knew it was going to be
close. There were a bunch of
events we thought would be
close and they turned out to be.
It was a big help to get started
like that.”
The Aggies were led by
Roark, who set two season best
times in claiming first in both
the 100 and 200 breaststroke,
while also winning the 200
individual medley. The Aggies
went on to put away the Tigers
with a convincing 170-128
score, and dominated Rice,
taking down the Owls 175-90.
For the men, (3-2) it was less
a story of a quick start than that
of total domination, which the
186-104 score does not com
pletely tell. The men consistent
ly claimed the top spot, winning
12 of the 16 events, as well as

claiming the top three spots in a
single event five separate times.
“It was a pleasant surprise to
swim as well as we did,” said
men’s head coach Mel Nash.
“We knew we were going to
swim well, but the number of
best times and the degree of the
drop was surprising. We rested
(beforehand), but not as much
as I thought it would take to get
to those performances.”
The Aggie victory was a team
effort. Freshmen Devin Saez,
Matt Neal and Alex Dawson all
claimed the first wins of their
college career. Saez marked his
lifetime best time of 1:49.78 in
the 200 butterfly, a time that is
good for 10th on the A&M all-
time list. Dawson set a season
best with his win in the 200-indi
vidual medley.
“As a freshman I was
unsure of what to expect (from
LSU),” Neal said. “We trained
so hard over Christmas and
this whole week looked better
everyday. I knew we were
going to swim fast.”
Another surprise for the
Aggies was the performance of
freshman Mark Solomon. Just
days away from scheduled
knee surgery, Solomon was
able to post a personal season
and collegiate best time of
9:31.03 in the 1,000 freestyle,
trailing only teammate senior
Patrick Dideum, who also
posted a season best time in
winning the event.
