The album gives a glimpse into a production that has already earned three Golden Globe awards. Featuring the original cast recordings from the movie, the album reveals that lead actresses Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah and lead actor Richard Gere are more than just pretty faces. A pleasant surprise is the vocal talent of Zeta-Jones. Her full voice will make listeners wonder why she has been missing from their stereos for so long. The soundtrack includes songs not featured in the movie as well. “Class” is a slow, smooth number with Zeta-Jones and Latifah that was (unfortunately) cut from the movie in the final edit. The other two bonus tracks, “Cell Block Tango” (recorded by Latifah, Lil’ Kim and Macy Gray) and “Love Is A Crime” (recorded by Anastacia) were simply inspired by the movie and could have easily been left off the album without having lost much. With its 1920s flavor, “Chicago’s” jazzy soundtrack is one which will find a welcome audience among musical lovers. expect. McMurtry is not an artist that will be found on any popu radio station, but he is one that should be found in any indis criminate music lover’s collection. —Denise Sd Matchbox Twenty The String Quartet Tribute to Matchbox Twenty Vitamin Records It seems inevitable that once a group gets popular, a tribe; album will soon surface. Matchbox Twenty’s tribute comesi form of a string quartet performing nine songs randomly chos off the group’s first two albums. He lands right in the middle, creating music that tells a story backed with a beat that will make the listener want to play the disc and drive. Partially recorded in Austin, Texas, the album has an unmis takable Texas flavor. Each track tells a story; yet, these are not the typical fall-in-or-out-of-love songs most artists reply upon. Instead, McMurtry’s stories have real meaning and invite the listener to pay close attention. The rhythmic guitars and under lying percussion help build the songs’ emotional appeal, making the album hard to forget. For a quick sample of what to expect on the album, go straight to the final track, “Choctaw Bingo.” With the opening rhythm and lines “Strap them kids in / Give ‘em a little bit vodka in a cherry coke / We’re goin’ to Oklahoma to the family reunion,” there is no doubt what kind of a ride listeners should liner is incorrect. While all the songs are present on the disc, are not performed in the listed order. This can be deceivinga; frustrating to listeners searching for a particular track. While The String Quartet Tribute to Matchbox Twenty ma a fun album for a die-hard Matchbox Twenty fan. it’s not one which the casual listener will have much interest. -Denise Self Ford would Agf By Downey Jr relates his past to role in The Singing Detect% Th | Texas A<$ head coach F tough time k petition. The self-dep recating actor even beats people to the punch to toss out a wisecrack. "Thank you, I'll be drunk by 10, told an audience at the Festival over the weekend, after a viewer asked him what he drew from his own life to help play the title character in "The Singing Detective," his first film since completing pro bation and rehabilitation that followed years of sub stance abuse. 'The Singing Detective" DOWNEY JR. marks an edgy comeback for Downey, 37, an Academy Awards nominee for 1992's "Chaplin" and an Emmy nominee for "Ally McBeal," a TV gig he ultimately lost because of ongoing drug arrests. Adapted by Dennis Potter from his 1986 miniseries, "The Singing Detective" is a film-noir musical fantasy about a mystery writer afflicted with a disease that attacks the joints and causes agonizing skin psori asis. Potter, who died in 1994, suffered from the same disease. Downey's character flits from bedridden reality, to fantasies where he's a tough, croon ing gumshoe, to painful recollections of child hood trauma. The actor said his own experiences gave him inspiration to tackle Potter's deliciously cynical character. "Sure, there's that whole idea of being able to use an affliction as a weapon, and there's nothing better for someone who's abused drugs as frequently as I," Downey said in an interview at Sundance, which runs through Sunday. "The best defense is a good offense." "The Singing Detective" co-stars Robin Wright Penn, Katie Holmes, Jeremy Northam and Mel Gibson, whose company produced the film. The producers premiered it at Sundance hoping to land a distributor to put the film into theaters. Downey's legal troubles began in when police found cocaine, heroin anda: tol in his vehicle.
