Rebounding was the key as the No. 18 Longhorns (10-4, 3-0) out-rebounded the Aggies 50-26. The rebounding margin tied the worst in A&M history set in the Aggies' last home game, a 77-56 loss to Texas Tech. “1 thought we had (rebounding) fixed after the Texas Tech game.” said A&M head coach Peggie Gillom. ”1 thought that was one of the keys to this game.” Conradt also thought rebounding was a key. “I think when you double up a team in rebounding that’s another stat that sticks out in my mind,” Conradt said. “When you do that, it gives you more opportunities.” The Aggies could not find a match in the paint for Longhorn junior forward Stacy Stephens. Stephens scored 1 1 of the Longhorns’ first 15 points and totaled 18 for the game. Stephens also contributed nine rebounds, despite play ing just 21 minutes. “The only time I didn't feel (like A&M could not stop Stephens) was when she was on the bench with two fouls,” Conradt said. No matter what the Aggies threw at Stephens, they just could not stop her. “I was just reading what the (Texas A&M) defense was giving me,” Stephens said. “1 totally just went with what 1 was feeling on the court.” The game started with Texas going in front with a 5-0 run by Stephens that extended into an 11-0 run for the Longhorns during the opening 3:21 of the game. The Aggies never got within seven the rest of the game. “Texas just dominated this game and dictated it,” Gillom said. “There was nothing we did to correct it.” After being behind 37-20 at half time, the Aggies started strong in the second half when junior forward Janae Derrick scored a lay-up just 28 seconds into the half. Derrick scored 12 points to lead the Aggies. The Longhorns quickly squashed any comeback hopes when sophomore Kala Bowers hit a shot 20 seconds later. The Aggies never got within 15 points the rest of the way. Bowers contributed 10 points and eight rebounds to the Longhorn effort. Aggie freshman guard Rhianna Reed scored eight points in the last three min utes, six from behind the three-point arc, but it was too late; Jody’s Roadies were already celebrating in the stands. “I think our kids just got down and they could not fight back,” Gillom said. “I didn’t see any fight in their eyes.” The Aggies look to rebound as they travel to Norman, Okla. on Saturday, Nov. 18 to take on the No. 23 Oklahoma Sooners. Mariucci was released from the final year of his contract. He jockeyed unsuccessfully for a contract extension last season. Mariucci led the 49ers to four playoff berths. The team was knocked out of this postseason last week end with a 31 -6 loss at Tampa Bay. “This is not a performance issue that has forced us to reach this decision,” team owner John York said. “Rather, our decision is based upon a differ ence in philosophy within the 49ers’ structure on how to best utilize our various talents in pursuing the goal of fielding championship teams and win ning a Super Bowl.” As much success as Mariucci had, his two predecessors — Bill Walsh and George Seifert — led San Francisco to a total of five Super Bowl championships, the first in 1982 and the most recent in 1995. The Jacksonville Jaguars now are the only other team with a head coaching vacancy and are thought to be interested in Mariucci. The Jaguars fired Tom Coughlin last month. Mariucci made $2.1 million this season, 19th among the NFL’s 32 head coaches and a bargain rate for a coach with Mariucci's track record. He angered the 49ers’ front office last winter by campaigning for a new contract through the media, and then talking to the Buccaneers last February about becoming their coach and general manager. The teams worked out a compensation package, but when Mariucci waffled on his decision, Tampa Bay hired Jon Gruden instead. After rejecting Tampa Bay’s offer, Mariucci changed agents and rededicated himself to the 49ers. They won the NFC West and finished 10-6, despite significant injury problems on defense. The 49ers won their first-round playoff game by rallying from a 24-point deficit to beat the New York Giants, but they were never in the second-round game against Tampa Bay. Defensive tackle Sean Moran called Wednesday “a sad day for the players.” “I can't believe they let him go. He’s a great coach and a wonderful human being,” Moran said outside the team’s training facility, where the announcement of the firing was made. “You could actually talk to him. He wasn’t one of those dictator types who you're afraid to meet with because you don’t know what will happen.” e Weddle, IV \ndrews Chattaway Cruz Dover Johnican .andtroop ;ger Palmer Peffer >n Phipps Porterfield ell Reichel n Rowan •d Schulze ri Soeken iam Strongin Warner :rt Wills Voodley ion Askew shop : Clark Gandillon Gray >ert Horlacher Jernigan rado :on Marshall 'dcAnally n McDaniel n McDonald :han Millard : Patton e Pennington Ryan Shaw 'istopher Tarver Wied 8 Alan Adams Cate is Chukwuma ichardson We Are re America's # I Service Company!
