Ags hosting weekend action
By Jeff Allen
THE BATTALION
This weekend will be one of
the last chances to see the men’s
and women’s swimming and
diving teams in their natural
habitat at the Student Recreation
Center Natatorium.
The men (2-2) will be enter
ing the weekend’s meet against
long-time rival Louisiana State
University, putting their No. 20
national ranking — as well as a
streak of consecutive weekly top
25 finishes dating back to 1995
— on the line against the Tigers.
The Aggies have had recent
success against the Tigers, having
beaten them in each of the past
five contests, including a lopsided
141-89 finish this past year in
Baton Rouge.
“It’s always been a neck and
neck battle (between us),” said
men’s head coach Mel Nash.
“(LSU) is always a very good,
solid team. We jumped out on
them a little bit recently, but
they always manage to get a
couple kids, even at the semes
ter, and you have to be ready for
a little surprise.”
The Aggie men expect more
of a challenge than what LSU
posed last season.
“Last year when we went out
there they didn't give us their best
shot, and 1 would imagine that
they would come here thinking
that they need to gain a little
respect back,” Nash said.
The women’s team (5-2) will
take on LSU and Rice University
this Saturday. The challenges,
though, do not end there for the

A&M freshman Paty Villareal leads the Big 12 standings in the 1650 -meter

No. 23 squad; it will also be fac
ing national power No. 5
University of Texas on Sunday.
“They (Texas) are the class
of the conference and have been
for a long time,” said women’s
head coach Steve Bultman. “ We
want to be at that level, and we
need to swim against them and
get up and race them and not be
scared, because we will see
them again at conference and at
the NCAA Championships.”
For the women, swimming
against Texas has never been
easy. They have, in fact, been
fairly hard-pressed to beat UT
during the past two decades, hav
ing fewer wins than the nation
has had presidents during that

stretch. The Aggies last took
down the Longhorns in 1999.
The A&M women have had
better luck against their other two
opponents, having owned, for the
most part, the series against Rice,
carrying a 24-4 record into
Saturday, and having beaten LSU
two of the past three years.
“LSU is a big rival. We won
the last relay to win the meet by a
couple points” Bultman said.
“They are a good team and match
up with us well, but it’s our pool
and we want to take care of our
own turf.”
Both Aggie teams take to the
pool at noon. The event is open
to the general public and is free
of charge.

Aggies defeat Nebraska on road
The Texas A&M men's basketball team toppled
the Nebraska Cornhuskers 53-52 Wednesday
night at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
The Aggies held off the Cornhuskers through
out the second half and opened up leads of 11
and 10 points in the half before Nebraska
stormed back and took its first lead of the clos
ing period with just more than two minutes
remaining in the game.
With one minute remaining in the contest,
senior guard Bernard King scored to put the
Aggies on top for good.
King led the Aggies in scoring with 18 points,
despite missing all six of his three-point attempts
during the game. Freshman Antoine Wright added
13 points for A&M.
