Jobs brought Apple Computers out of
financial trouble in the late 90s by pushing
development of new products that carve
their own niche in the marketplace, and
continued this trend at the MacWorld Expo
in San Francisco, California on Jan. 7. In
his keynote address, Jobs introduced two
firsts in laptop computer technology: the
world’s first 17-inch laptop and Apple’s
smallest introduction to the laptop world,
the 12-inch Powerbook G4.

Housed in the PowerBook’s lightweight
aluminum casing is a powerful 1 gigahertz
processor, a NVIDIA GeForce4 3D graph
ics processor for crystal-clear picture and
video, and a combination CD/DVD writer
dubbed the ‘SuperDrive.’ The notebook
features a 1.3 million pixel display with the
same viewable area as a 19-inch CRT mon

thick when closed and weighs less than 7
pounds. Also notable is the 17-inch G4’s
high speed wireless networking capabili

up to 54 megabits per second. The G4
sports an innovative fiberoptic backlit key
board with a built-in sensor that detects the
amount of ambient light in the room and
adjusts the brightness of the display and
keyboard accordingly.

First Israeli citizen set for shuttle mission
By Marcia Dunn
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
With security nearing an
all-time high, NASA began the
countdown for Thursday’s
planned launch of space shuttle
Columbia and Israel’s first
astronaut.
llan Ramon, a colonel in
Israel’s air force, flew to
Kennedy Space Center late
Sunday with his six American
crewmates. They arrived in a
small passenger jet; bad weath
er back home in Houston pre
vented them from flying them
selves in two-person training
jets as is the custom, said
NASA spokesman George
Diller.
“Happy to be here — final
ly,” Ramon said. The count
down clocks began ticking
soon afterward.
NASA kept the astronauts’
arrival and the start of the
countdown secret until
Monday morning, in keeping
with post-Sept. 1 1 security pro
cedures. The launch time will
not be revealed until 24 hours
in advance for the same
reason.
The 16-day scientific
research mission should have
taken place last summer after a
delay of more than a year, but
NASA’s entire shuttle fleet was
grounded because of cracked
fuel lines in each ship.
Columbia’s flight was bumped
behind a pair of space station
assembly missions that were
deemed more important.
Another crack in another part
of the shuttle had engineers work
ing practically nonstop over the
holidays to understand the prob
lem. Shuttle test director Jeff '
Spaulding said Monday the
analysis is almost completed and
managers almost certainly will
recommend Tuesday that the
problem is not all that serious and
Columbia is safe to fly.
Excellent weather is forecast
for Columbia’s liftoff, which is
set to occur sometime between 10
a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Air Force said Monday
no-fly zone restrictions around
the pad will be enforced three
hours earlier than usual on launch
day, compared with the other
shuttle flights that followed il>
Sept. 1 1 terrorist attacks
zone itself will not be expanded
Spaulding said he has
noticed anything unusual si
rounding security because
Ramon's presence.
“The average person com®
to work each day probably w®
even notice most of the still
Spaulding said. “The only# 1 !
we’re worried about is makil
sure we’ve got enough oppoi
ties to get off the ground.”
If Columbia does not blasts
by Friday, the flight likely will
delayed about a week because
the need to replace science
pies aboard the shuttle and
give the Air Force time
launch a critical commu#
tions satellite.
