■ PHILADELPHIA (AP) -
President Bush raised his voice
in a political controversy
enveloping Trent Lott, saying
the Senate Republican leader’s
mments about the segregated
were “offensive” and
required the apology he gave.
“Any suggestion that the seg-
Igated past was acceptable or
sitive is offensive and it is
ong,” Bush said
Thursday to a
mixed-race audi
ence here, drawing
long applause.
Lott’s office
Ini m e d i a t e 1 y
issued a statement
embracing the
president’s com
ments.
B “Senator Lott
■rees with
jp-esident Bush
that his words
were wrong and he
is sorry. He repu-
mates segregation because it is
■moral,” Lott spokesman Ron
JBonjean said.
I Weighing into the controver
sy for the first time, the presi-
(k’n: said the recent comments
Jk Lott “do not reflect the spirit
of our country.”
I “He has apologized and
lightly so,” Bush said. “Every
Jay our nation was segregated
|ps a day that America was
pifaithful to our founding
leals.”
After Bush’s speech. White
lous press secretary Ari
leischer said the president does
jfeot think Lott needs to resign as
tjority leader.
Fleischer said that Bush
decided to make the comments
to “show what was in his
heart”.
Lott said neither the adminis
tration nor any Republican col
leagues have asked him to resign
as the Senate GOP leader, as
some top Democrats have sug
gested.

Lott apologized Wednesday,
saying his words were “terri

Bush was animated as he
condemned Lott’s original
remarks. Audience members,
many of them minorities who
work in religious groups and
charities in inner-city communi

repeatedly cheered approval of
Bush’s words.

The Winona school district

Alvord schools closed for

percentage of sick students

Superintendent John Trice said.
The district reopened its

The Texas Department of
Health has reported to the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention that there is
“widespread influenza activity
in the state.”
Department spokesman
Doug McBride said it’s possible
that the Hong Kong strain of
influenza type B, which has not
been detected in the United
States since 1991, is responsible
for the increase in sick students.
“There seem to be more
cases in kids than normal,’
McBride said. “There’s not the
natural immunity that comes
over time from being exposed
to that particular strain.”
McBride said state health
officials are recommending a
flu shot for people who haven’t
gotten one, noting that the peak
of flu season in Texas is typi
cally January and February.
This year’s flu vaccine pro
tects against the Hong Kong,
Moscow and New Caledonia
strains of the influenza virus,
type B.
