NEWS IN BRIEF
INS Visa Regulations
Released Thursday
The International Programs for
Students office was scrambling
to notify all international stu
dents of the federal regulations
the Immigration and
Naturalization Services (INS)
released Wednesday, Dec. 11.
A detailed list of new F non
immigrant visa regulations can
be accessed at
international.tamu.edu/iss, the
International Student Services
(ISS) Web site.
"There are some dramatic
changes that are being introduced
here," said Suzanne Droleskey,
director of International Programs
for Students at Texas A&M.
She said one change will
require students to notify INS of
their intention to drop below
the required number of hours,
12, before the semester started.
"Normally, students are
allowed to drop below a full
time course load, but (it seems
now) international students
won't have that option,"
Droleskey said.
The report does allow three
exceptions each to be used one
time only, including a student
with a medical reason, academic
difficulties or a student who
requires less than 12 hours in his
last semester before graduation.
There is no way for a student
to know if they are going to
experience academic difficulties
or encounter medical problems
before the semester starts,
Droleskey said. The new law
requires students to notify INS
in January. The new rules go into
effect Jan. 1.
ISS will explain the new regula
tions at seminars at 5 p.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 17 and 3 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 18 in Room 201
in the Memorial Student Center.
Droleskey said regulations
for the J visa, a non-immigrant
visa, were released Thursday
as well, but that her office had
not yet had the chance to sift
through them.
According to the ISS web site,
J visa information seminars will
be held once the regulations
have been published.
