‘Equilibrium
Christian Bale, Sean Bean star in off-balance
J
KRT CAMPUS - Kurt Wimmer claims directing and writing
credits for the new sci-fi thriller Equilibrium. 1 he fraud.
The real writers were George Orwell, Ray Bradbury,
Margaret Atwood and the Wachowskis, the guys who cooked up
the martial arts-meets-sci-fi thriller. The Matrix.
Equilibrium is a semi-cool, semi-cut-rate Minority Report,
last summer’s Steven Spielberg film of a Philip K. Dick story
that was, in turn, a riff on Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 45!. Which is
a long way of saying that Equilibrium is another movie about a
law enforcement officer in a future, fascist society who discov
ers that what he’s doing is immoral.
Christian Bale is Cleric John Preston, a Judge Dredd sort of
enforcer in a world that has — after World War 111 — decided that
human emotions are the cause of all its ills.
Cleric Preston hunts down rebels who are guilty of “sense
crimes.” He’s on his guard for anyone who displays any emotion
or sense of aesthetics.
When his partner (Sean Bean) cribs a book of poetry by W.B.
Yeats at a raid, you know the guy’s toast.
Literally. Those who feel are incinerated, all on the orders of
“Father,” the Big Brother who calls the legions of lemmings to
their version of daily ritualized prayers — their daily doses of
Prozium, the drug that keeps everyone zonked and unemotional.
Preston misses a dose, and then there’s the one arrest that
makes him question his actions — she’s played by the puppy
eyed Emily Watson.
Before you know' it, he’s saving Emily Watson from slaugh
ter and resolving to find a way to stop the drugs so that no one
will love Big Brother — sorry. Father.
Silly stuff, all mixed up together like a term paper from a kid
who can’t quite distinguish one sci-fi work from another.
Bale, the years are showing us, is as aptly-named as Vin
Diesel. His baleful glower is perfect for a man who is drugged
into no longer feeling, and trained, ninja-fashion, to use his
body and his guns to maximum effect.
Bale has also become the most absurdly buff celebrity this
side of Barry' Bonds. Wimmer manages to sneak several scenes
of genuine emotion into all this plot and production design.
And the action bits go into full Matrix overdrive, with Bale
an able warrior to carry out the moves, leaps and precision gun
and swordplay that the role calls for. The first of these, in a
darkened room illuminated only by gun-muzzle flashes, is the
most dazzling.
If you ignore the 500 or so gun and sword deaths and make a
game of the many plots stolen for this and can lust after the
cool black-on-black clothes while laughing at the not-so-futur-
istic cars and buildings, you're going to enjoy Equilibrium. If
you can’t do that, wait for Minority Report on video.
