Dec. 4, 7 pm MSC Visual Arts Gallery NBC rm. 289 * FREE ADMISSION * (AP) — To those who never saw him pitch, Dave McNally will always be remembered for winning a legal case that changed baseball forever. To those who played with him, the smooth Baltimore left hander represented a lot more. “We all understood what the McNally-Messersmith case meant. But to me, what he did on the field overshadowed that,” Hall of Fame teammate Jim Palmer said Monday. “Let’s not forget that Dave was a heck of a pitcher.” McNally, who pitched the Orioles to their first World Series championship and later teamed with Andy Messersmith for the labor victory that led to the free-agent era and multimil- lion-dollar salaries, has died of cancer. He was 60. McNally died late Sunday in his hometown of Billings, Mont., said John Michelotti of M i c h e l o t t i Sawyers & N o r d q u i s t Funeral Home. McNally’s 1- 0, 11 -inning win over Minnesota in the 1969 AL championshi p series still stands as the longest complete-game shutout in post season history. His courage and determination led him ... to challenge a flawed systettiy and thus helped pave the way to improved working conditions for all professional athletes. — Don Fehr head of MLB players' union And he remains the only pitcher to hit a grand slam in the World Series. Yet McNally’s most signifi cant victory came off the field. In 1975, he joined Messersmith in the grievance that toppled the sport’s century-old reserve clause, giving veteran players the right to choose their team. “His courage and determi nation led him. along with Andy Messersmith. to chal lenge a flawed system, and thus helped pave the way to improved working conditions for all professional athletes,” players’ union Don Fehr said. McNally was 184-119 life time with a 3.24 ERA. In 1968- 69, he tied the AL record with 17 straight wins. With Palmer and Mike Cuellar, McNally gave the Orioles one of the most formida ble rotations in history during the 1960s and ’70s. When Palmer's youngest daughter was born, he picked McNally and his wife as the godparents. McNally wore No. 19 during his Orioles’ career. Earlier this year, the most famous Baltimore athlete to wear No. 19 also died — Johnny Unitas. Two years ago, just after shortstop Alex Rodriguez signed the union fi claiming the renew his rights in perpetuity. The Dodgers later agreed to Messersmith’s salary demand but wouldn’t give him a no-trade clause, and union head Marvin Miller went to McNally, whose contract also had been unilater ally renewed, asking him to join the case. Arbitrator Peter Seitz agreed with the players, issuing the deci sion on Dec. 23, 1975, that over turned the reserve clause. Owners and the union then nego tiated a labor deal under which players could become free agents after six seasons in baseball. With teams competing to sign the top stars, the average salary rose from $44,000 in 1975 to $2.38 million at the start of this season. David Arthur McNally was bom in Billings on Oct. 31, 1942, and signed with Baltimore in 1960. He later became the first pitcher elected into the Orioles Hall of Fame. While with the Orioles, he gave up A1 Kaline’s 3,000th career hit and Rod Carew’s first major league hit. A funeral was scheduled for Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Billings. SPORTS IN BRIEF Athletics send Koch, salary to Chicago CHICAGO (AP) — Dumping yet another big salary, the Oakland Athletics traded closer Billy Koch to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in a six-player trade. In exchange for Koch and two minor leaguers, the Athletics will get White Sox closer Keith Foulke, catcher Mark Johnson and minor league right-hander Joe Valentine. Koch went 11-4 with 44 saves last season, appearing in an AL-high 84 games. Only Minnesota’s Eddie Guardado had more saves in the AL, with 45. Koch had a $2.35 million base salary this season and made $150,000 in performance bonus es. He’s eligible for salary arbitra tion this year, and his salary is likely to double. The A’s are picking up another big paycheck with Foulke. The right hander is due $6 million next sea son, the final year of a $10 million, two-year contract. He’s eligible for free agency after next season. Foulke struggled last season, los ing his closer role midway through the year. He went from June 27 to Sept. 17 without a save and finished with only 11. He was 2-4 with a 2.90 ERA. DEADLINE: Jan. 17, 2003 online at uis.tamu.edu FREE DELIVER his record $252 million, 10-year contract, McNally commented on the deal on the day he was honored as Montana’s athlete ot the century. “My first thought when I saw that was: Did Texas offer him $250 million and he wanted 2 more?” he told the Billings Gazette. “How did they get to $252 million?” McNally won 20 or more games in four straight seasons from 1968 to 1971. After help ing the Orioles to their fifth divi sion title in six years, he was traded with outfielder Rich Coggins and minor leaguer Bill Kirkpatrick to the second-divi sion Montreal Expos for Ken Singleton and Mike Torrez on Dec. 4. 1974.
