Justified's 13 tracks seem to require no real effort on the singer’s behalf and only reiterate Timberlake’s powerful pop status to himself. Timberlake goes to extreme measures to ensure that every song on the album mimics the king of pop. In his track “Like I Love You” the singer attempts to be seductive, but the music’s quirky and radio friendly style are anything but. “Take It From Here’’ is a confusing track that attempts to sound like old school R&B, but falls flat due to the lack of versatility in Timberlake’s vocals. The young singer should be given credit for salvaging tunes such as “Seniorita” and “Rock Your Body.” Although there is no shortage of suggestive lyrics on this album, danceable beats manage to make the the tracks more tolerable. The track “(Oh No) What You Got” is a cut above the other tracks on the album due to its hummable lyrics and eastern flavor. Timberlake was ambitious enough to try and fill the shoes of Michael Jackson, but his attempts seem like pale imitations at best. The fact that most of Justified’s tracks have a guest rapper proves Timberlake is still dependent (with or without ‘NSync) when it comes to creating tunes of his own. As for his position in the kingdom of pop, it wouldn’t be “justifiable” to rank ‘NSYNC’s front man anywhere near the status of Jackson, the true king of pop. Maybe Timberlake can be the court jester instead. U2 The Best of 1990 - 2000 Island let' ne second greatest hits offering from U2, The Bestofify [), compiles the most well-known songs from theIrishc last four albums. 'uT'urur Nishat Fc Music Review V 2.002 Matchbox Twenty More Than You Think You Are Lava Records Four years spanned between Matchbox Twenty’s first two albums Both releases proved markedly different in substance and style. Now it’s been two years and fans have waited with one question on their minds: What will the group’s third album be like? Now the wait can end. as More Than You Think You Are hits store shelves. What fans will find is an album where every song stands alone. Matchbox Twenty has always suxxl apart from other rock groups with its own distinctive sound. This style continues into the third album but in an even more extreme manner. No two songs on More Titan You Think You Are sound alike, nor do they sound like everything else that floods radio today. Much of the album has a 1970s classic rock feel. “You're So Real’ is psychedelic in its rhythms, and “Cold” is the hardest rock this band has ever performed. However, Matchbox Twenty’s slower songs have often earned them the most recognition. “Unwell” commands attention with its message, addictive rhythm and banjo, which is something typically unheard of in rock music. Gospel music, which is also a rock rarity, is embraced by the band in the song “Downfall.” While lead singer Rob Thomas wrote all of the previous album’s songs. More Than You Think You Are features greater variety. While Thomas remains the primary writer, the album contains “Disease” (the band’s first single from the album) which was co-written by Mick Jaggar and “Could I Be You,” written by drummer Paul Doucette. Between these writing changes, Thomas' own maturation in song writing, and a slightly new perspective on life, cause the lyrics to define what makes this band tick. More Than You Think You Are is more than worthy of following Matchbox Twenty’s first two albums. It is an outstanding release that would make a great addition to anyone’s collection. Denise Schoppe IX/loney for of a Lifetime! The collection possesses the very bluesy, melodic, qualift that has dominated the band's sound in the post-JoshuaTreeVt I he highlights include smash hits like "Beautiful Dav,’ ■ I h >U \k-. 1 In ill Me, Kiss Me. Kill Me,” and “Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out of.” The Best of also features two new songs including the eife al “Electrical Storm” a William Orbit-produced gem and ft Hands That Built America” the theme to the upcomingfiln Gangs of New York. It also features new mixes of past hits lit “Numb” and "Discotheque.” I 2's introspective, poignant lyrics are accentuated u „uum by “The Edge's” unique, clean guitar sound and Bono'sunc takable vocals. The only detraction from the compilation is the suspicie. absence of “Elevation” and “Walk On” from U2's 2000 Grammy-w inning AH That You Can t Leave Behind. Records There is only one term for Trick Pony’s sophomore album On A Mission: “honky-tonk.” I rick Pony, an unconventional group composed of a soulfe female lead singer, traditional country guitarist andcrazyrods bassist, devotes most of the album to its signature hard-rocl country sound. On A Mission stirs up visions of a smoky bai full of cowboys and cowgirls out to have a good time. Despite the party appeal of the album, powerful balladslto “Love Be Still” and “Rain” fit in perfectly and show thisgroq is about more than just a good time. Though Heidi Newfield is generally known as the lead singer, Keith Burns and Ira Dean take its own turns intfeW position, giving the album’s sound even more variety. All but three of the songs on the album are co-written:, members. One such song is the duet with Willie Nelsonon “Whiskey River.” While the song comes off as more ofavtw battle between Nelson and Newfield for the lead, the magic® has made the song popular for so long remains, makingiu® finishing touch to a strong album.
