Missouri edges A&M in 20T
By Troy Miller
THE BATTALION
A week after defeating the No. 1 team in the
nation, the Texas A&M football team fell to the
Missouri Tigers, suffering its second overtime defeat
of the season.
Freshman quarterback Reggie McNeal, who had
started his first game of the season, went down early
in the second quarter with an ankle injury, making
way tor sophomore Dustin Long to take over the
team for the rest of the game.
Long led the Aggies (6-5, 3-4) back from a
17-3 halftime deficit only to lose 33-27 to the
Tigers (5-6, 2-5) in double overtime. Long threw
tor 270 yards on 22 of 35 passing only to see
Missouri and quarterback Brad Smith rack
up 430 yards of total offense against the
Wrecking Crew.
This is the fourth game that the Aggies have
allowed 400 yards of offense, all of them coming
at home.
“Any time you get the opportunity to play
football at this level at one of the great venues in
the nation then there’s no reason to come out
flat,” said senior linebacker Brian Gamble.
“That’s what’s frustrating.”
In the first overtime, both teams traded 40-yard
field goals to tie the game at 27. In the second over
time period, A&M looked as if it was rolling to a
touchdown. On third and goal from the six-yard
line. Long threw a pass intended for senior wide
receiver Bethel Johnson.
Missouri junior cornerback Michael Harden
slipped inside of Johnson to intercept the pass.
“I threw it and (Harden) made a good break in
front of Bethel and picked'it off,” Long said.
Only needing a field goal to win, the Tigers ran
the ball on five consecutive plays that ended with
Smith running one yard for the touchdown and the
33-27 victory.
The Aggies came out of the gates flat as
Missouri marched down the field in 5:31 from the
opening kickoff to score a 20-yard field goal by
junior Mike Matheny.
McNeal’s start made him the third starting quar-

terback for the Aggies this season. McNeal started
where he left off against Oklahoma by throwing a
58-yard bomb to sophomore receiver Terrance
Murphy on the first play from scrimmage.
The drive ended in a 25-yard field goal by fresh
man Todd Pegram to tie the score at 3-3.
The rest of the half was all Missouri as junior
tailback Zack Abron scored two touchdowns, one
on the ground and the other in the air.
The Aggies blocked a last-second field goal
attempt to keep the score 17-3 going into halftime.
The play of the first half came at the 10:45 mark
in the second quarter. As the pocket closed in
around McNeal, he tried to scramble only to be met
by Missouri linebacker James Kinney and defen
sive tackle Keith Wright.
McNeal stayed on the turf and left the game with
an ankle injury and did not return for the Aggies.
Inspired play in the second half brought the

Aggies get swept by Wildcats
By True Brown
THE BATTALION
The Kansas State Wildcats
handed the Texas A&M volley
ball team its worst home loss in
six years Sunday, sweeping the
Aggies and stopping a five match
winning streak.
No. 20 KSU (18-6, 14-2 Big
12) used solid defense and block
ing to claim a 30-21,30-23, 30-26
win in G. Rollie White Coliseum.
The loss by A&M (18-8, 10-7)
was its first ever at home against
the Wildcats, who now own an 8-
7 edge in the series.
KSU, which had not played
since Nov. 9, showed no signs
of rust and controlled the match
from the first serve.
“That bye week can kind of
go one way or another,” said
KSU head coach Suzie Fritz.
“You’re either going to come out

and look like you haven’t played
in a while or you can come back
with fresh legs. Our team
embraced an opportunity to
come back and compete.”
A&M was held to a .117 hit
ting percentage, its second low
est of the season.
“We tightened up and tried
to do some things that we don’t
normally do,” said A&M head
coach Laurie Corbelli. “We
tried extra hard to beat this
team, and by doing so, we were
totally out of our game.”
The Aggies never led in
game one after an early five-
point run by the "Wildcats.
A&M was behind 14-12 in the
second frame, but another streak
by KSU proved costly. KSU set
ter Gabby Guerre served up five
consecutive points to put the
game out of reach.
Another big run in the final
SPORTS IN BRIEF
frame proved to be the nail in
A&M’s coffin. The Aggies
came out from the break with a
12-5 lead, but then surrendered
eight points in a row and never
led again.
“We played very well,”
Fritz said. “We didn’t make a
lot of errors. This is a very effi
cient volleyball team. We don’t
have a lot of stars.”
Unlike KSU, A&M was beset
by errors. The Aggies had 29
attack errors to go with five ser
vice errors, all of which came at
inopportune times.
“That first touch, when the
ball comes across the net to
your team, if you can put it on
target you can do just about
anything,” Corbelli said. “Our
first touch today wasn’t very
good. We didn’t pass well. The
quality of our passing wasn’t
where it usually is.”

Men’s and women’s swim teams
defeat University of Louisiana-
Lafayette in Friday night meet
One attribute of a good team is its ability to win the
matches it is supposed to.
The meet at the Student Rec Center Natatorium
Friday night for the No. 16 men’s swimming and diving
team (2-2) and the No. 24 women’s team (4-2) against
their counterparts from the University of Louisiana-
Monroe presented such an occasion.
“In the locker room we knew we wanted to show them
respect,” said senior Zach Widener. “They drove seven
hours, and we wanted to give them our best perfor
mance just for showing up to race, (plus) we have got a
big fall invitational (next week), and we want to sent out
times that they can see that (we) are coming in ready.
Without overlooking these guys, we were getting ready
for next week.”
If Friday night was any indication, the men are most
certainly ready for anything that may be awaiting them
next weekend in Pittsburgh.
Led by Widener and freshman Andrew Sullivant, the
Aggies claimed first place in 11 of 16 events en route to
a 173-117 win over the Indians. The win moved the men
back to the .500 mark after finishing behind national
powerhouses Texas and University of Southern
California two weeks ago.
The women claimed all 14 swimming events, includ
ing both relays, on their way to a 160-115 win, and had
some strong performances from some of the less expe
rienced swimmers. Led by sophomore Ashley Roark and
freshman Adriana Marmolejo, the Aggies cruised
through the night without much problem.
Roark and Marmolejo each won a pair of events on the
evening for the Aggies. Roark claimed the 500 freestyle
and the 200 individual medley for the woman.
Marmolejo chipped in with victories in the 100 back-
stroke and the 200 breast stroke.
