The sounds only get more eerie once you realize the children singing could very well be the chil dren of Gatlin, Neb., who killed every adult of the town three years before Vicky (Hamilton) and Burt (Horton) arrive. The children are under the influence of Isaac (Franklin) and Malachi, who worship “the man who walks behind the rows.” Burt and Vicky’s characters commits the same no-nos - splitting up and wandering through a spooky town unarmed - included in almost every 1980s slasher film However, the movie does have its scary moments, minus the gross- out factor of today’s films. One such moment occurs when Burt stum bles upon a teenage boy preparing to sacrifice himself to the com god. Creepier still is the scene in which Malachi holds Vicky captive in the middle of the street snd screams “outlander!” with his Steve Tyler lips. Other key points involve Isaac returning from the dead and switch ing from his helium-infused voice to a low raspy gurgle asking for Malachi. Parents play this dreamy adventure for their four-year-olds, with all of its colorful settings and happy sing-along songs, but pay little regard to the wicked witches, twisting tornadoes, trees that fling their fruit and 5 A Thursday, October 31, 2002 evil flying monkeys, oh my\ In the the rush to get poor Dorothy and her little dog back to Kansas, the duo and their fellow travellers encounter horror upon hor ror and the lonely terror of being lost in a strange land. As if the tornado that brings the farm girl to Oz isn’t harrowing enough, the twister slams her house onto a human being. Remember the Wicked Witch of the East and her legs shrivelling up underneath the house’s framing? In the dark forest, the trees come to life and inflict calamities, like throwing apples at Dorothy and her companions. All urban legends aside - like the one about the munchkin that hanged himself in the forest or the one about rock band Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, an album that can loosely serve as a soundtrack to the film —all that aside, the movie is freaky enough. The other mysterious elements only increase the film’s deceiving madness. Rosemary's Baby Catherine Deneuve 1968 —Thomas Phillips Sometimes the scariest things are the things unseen. Rosemary's Baby taps into that idea, making it one of the best hor ror movies to date. Released in 1968, the movie proves that sometimes the best movies have already been made. In it, Rosemary is sold by her husband to Satan, who rapes her, bringing forth Rosemary’s baby. The techniques Roman Polanski employed in filming the movie helps make an already suspenseful plot come to life with a punch that many modern movies lack. Rosemary's Baby is a psychological thriller that uses a mother’s innate need to protect her unborn child to strike fear in its viewers. It doesn’t run on cheap thrills or gotcha moments. From the opening strains of the haunting soundtrack to the final credits, the unease and fear continues to build until it leaves the view er breathless. It is paranoia at its best. —Denise Schoppe is baby-sitting fe :s phone calls from if she has check is a creepy seriesi killer escapes fra termined detect ake the law intolis ets out to findtk ind the now-add' will keep vieweis Walton passed c ise the film’s ho vhen viewers mi ?lot is going, think twice ate aby-sitting, but e at night in feat Hughes writing book on work with Bush NEW YORK (AP) — Formei ite House counselor Karer Hughes is writing a book about working with President George W.
