October 10, 2002 NEi THE BATTALkj Hitchhiking prostitute executed for murder 7A Lursday, Octob Dat STARKE, Fla. (AP) — Aileen Wuomos, a hitchhiking prostitute who killed six men along Florida’s highways more than a decade ago, was executed by injection Wednesday after dropping her appeals and firing her lawyers. Wuornos, 46, became the 10th woman executed in the United States since capital pun ishment resumed in 1977. Oklahoma has put three women to death; Florida and Texas have executed two each. In her final statement, she referred to Jesus and a block buster movie. “I’d just like to say I’m sailing with the Rock and I’ll be back like ‘Independence Day’ with Jesus, June 6, like the movie, big mother ship and all. I’ll be back,” Wuomos said. The execution had been delayed while experts evaluated her mental health. Gov. Jeb Bush lifted his stay last week after three psychiatrists concluded Wuomos was competent to choose execution. t Wuomos shot to death at least six middle-aged men along Florida highways in 1989 and 1990. Her story has been por trayed in two movies, three books and an opera. She initially said the killings were in self-defense after she was assaulted by customers who picked her up. But she later said the self-defense claim was a lie and she intended to rob and kill the men. At a hearing in July, Wuomos told a judge she was “sick of hearing this ‘she’s crazy’ stuff. I’m competent, sane and I’m telling the truth.” She also told the state Supreme Court she would kill again. Wuomos’ death warrant was for her first victim. Richard Mallory, an electronics shop owner. She later pleaded no con test to five other murders. She spent Tuesday night visit ing with a childhood friend. Dawn Botkins, who said Wuomos was in a good mood, laughing a lot and never crying. “She was looking forward to being home with God and get ting off this Earth,” Botkins said. Arnaout, 40, head of the Benevolence International Foundation, has been in federal custody since April. The indictment said a crimi nal enterprise that existed for at least a decade used charitable contributions from innocent Muslims, non-Muslims and cor porations to support bin Laden’s al-Qaida network, Chechen rebels fighting the Russian army and armed violence in Bosnia. “It is sinister to prey on good hearts to fund the works of evil,” Ashcroft said in announcing the charges in Chicago. Neither Ashcroft nor U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald would specify how much money went to terrorists. Ashcroft said documents found in the organi zation’s office in Bosnia have provided “chill ing” evidence tying Arnaout directly to bin Laden and al-Qaida. He said the papers summarize the 1988 meeting at which the terror network was It is sinister to prey on good hearts to fund the works of evil — John Ashcroft Attorney general founded, and include a text of the networksoas of allegiance.
