AGGIE LlFij the battalJ E E JCEE TXXXXXFTZXi CCCL R III I Q Red Dragon Universal Pictures Starring Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes & Anthony Hopkins Red Dragon, based on the book by Thomas Harris, is an intelli gent thriller which will leave viewers sleeping with the lights on. The movie was marketed as a prequel to Silence of the Lambs. However, the story is not about Hannibal Lecter, although he does figure into the narrative. Red Dragon follows the attempts of FBI agent Will Graham (Norton) to track down psychopath Francis Dolarhyde (Fiennes). Incidentally, Graham is the FBI agent who put Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) behind bars, which is made clear in the first scene of the movie. Lecter reappears in the narrative when Graham, at a dead end in his search, turns to Lecter for insight into the as yet unknown criminal’s mind. Fans of the Harris novel should thoroughly enjoy this on-tilm rendition. Aside from a few minor discrepancies, the film is true to the book. Large portions of the novel’s dialogue are even used ver batim. which is a refreshing change from the butchering that often takes place when adapting a book to film. Red Dragon will also be a thrilling watch for those who know absolutely nothing about the Hannibal Lecter trilogy. The imagery is haunting, the story line flows smoothly and the acting is excel lent. Hannibal Lecter, as always, is more than sufficiently creepy. The psychopath Francis Dolarhyde is convincing in his inner battle between sanity and insanity, stemming from years of abuse at the hands of his grandmother. At times, one almost feels sorry for him. As Graham says at the end of the movie, “This man wasn't born a monster. He was made one.” Viewers should remember that Dolarhyde’s struggle is docu mented in graphic detail. Even though Red Dragon is primarily a psychological movie, there are a few gory murder scenes that are not for the weak of heart. —Jessica Crutcher The Good Girl Fox Searchlight Starring Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gllenhaal & John C. Reilly In what may be the most thought-provoking movie of the year, The Good Girl, Jennifer Aniston brings her character, Justine,io life in a way any woman, and possibly any man, can relate to, Justine is stuck in a dead-end life with a dead-end job and a dead end husband. Phil (Reilly). Working in the makeup department in a small-town Texas drug store, Justine finds what she believestobe her salvation in Holden (Gyllenhaal), a cashier at the drugstore Holden, who is beset with emotional problems, opens Justines mind to a world she never imagined existed. Justine and Holden begin an affair in an effort to escape the world that is holding them down. Justine is frustrated withherpot head husband and their static relationship, and Holden cannot hatt die living with his parents who are unable to understand him. 1m relationship that is doomed to fail. Holden becomes obsessed with Justine, who quickly begins to realize that she may not have beer, prepared for what unfolds. In a desperate attempt to turn his and Justine’s world around, Holden steals $1().(KK) from the store that they work in and asks Justine to run away with him. Faced with a decision that couldfot- ever change her life, Justine has to choose between a monotonous life and an uncertain future. Although a wholly depressing movie. The Good Girl also invokes a good deal of laughter. Despite Justine's inner struggle, she is surrounded by humorous characters and in her attemptto hide her affair, runs into many amusing situations. In one such instance, to try to make herself feel better about her affair with Holden, Justine accepts an invitation from one of her co-workers to attend a church service. In an ironic twist of fate, Justine’s plan is foiled when she runs into Holden and his mother, who arealsoat the service. In a move that utterly confuses Justine’s husband, who she literally dragged to the service. Justine suddenly beats abash retreat, using the excuse that she has forgotten her Bible and feels so horrible about it, she can not participate. Aniston portrays her role in a way no audience member can deny is brilliant and Gyllenhaal offsets her character perfectly. Overall, a sad movie, but definitely worth it. -Elizabeth W Photo Courtesy of www.yahoo.com Anthony Hopkins plays the man-eating serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Universal Pictures’ Red Dragon with Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes.
