Trio of Aggie men head to Tennessee tourney By Gary Livingston THE BATTALION After a week off, the Texas A&M men's tennis team will head to Tennessee to compete in the ITA All- American in Chattanooga. The tourna ment will run today through Oct. 13. All-American senior Ryan Newport, who is ranked No. 24 nationally, will be making his season debut at the tournament competing in the main draw singles. Newport is the fifth All-American in A&M tennis history and the third under head coach Tim Cass. Last sea son, he reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championships. “Ryan is as strong as I’ve ever seen him,” Cass said. “He still has certain things to work on before the season starts though.” Coach Cass said the upcoming tournament in Tennessee is an All- American premier event where many of the top 100 players in the country will be competing. Other Aggies making the trip will be Ante Matijevic and Lester Cook. Both will compete in the qualification rounds running today through Oct. 9, and then team up in the main draw doubles running Oct. 10-13. In doubles the pair is ranked No. 14 nationally. This will be Cook and Matijevic’s second tournament of the year. Both competed in the H.E.B. Baylor Intercollegiate Tournament at the end of September. “Lester (Cook) got to the quarterfi nals and had a very good tournament,” Cass said. “He did some things that I've never seen from him before.” Cass said Cook could be a great weapon for the Aggies this season if he adds some muscle to improve his strength and works on some technical components of his game. Other Aggies who competed in the Baylor Tournament were junior Khaled El Dorry and freshman Matt Loucks. Cass said El Dorry looked a little rusty and while he has been practic ing well, he is not match-tough yet. But Cass said he isn't too concerned about him. As for Loucks, who made his col legiate debut at the tournament, Cass said that the freshman now has a good point of reference for the col lege game and the level it will take to be successful. The men’s tennis team took advantage of the off week by bring ing in recruits to look at A&M. Like in other sports, the team was respon sible for entertaining the recruits and helping them decide which college to attend. “The team is very important in the (recruiting) process,” Cass said. “It was a key weekend for the program.” In addition to the ITA All- American Tournament in Tennessee, the Aggie men’s tennis team will also compete in a tournament recently added to the schedule. The Baloon Fiesta Classic will take place in New Mexico Oct. 11-13. Cass said that he will be sending El Dorry and will have challenge matches to see who competes in the other two slots. Hedberg, Roland to represent women in Calif. By Jeff Allen THE BATTALION Two women from the Texas A&M women’s tennis team will travel to Pacific Palisades. Calif, this weekend to compete at the annual ITA Riviera All-American Championships. Junior Jessica Roland and sophomore Ashley Hedberg will be representing A&M at this year’s tournament. Roland will be competing in the singles competition again this year will be joined by Hedberg in the doijbles'bracket. Rbland is ranked No; 59 nationally as an individual going into play, and the duo of Hedberg and Roland is the No. 16 team in the national preseason polls. After finishing last year's tourna ment in the second round of qualify- mg, Roland is looking to make good on a selection in this year's main draw. Hedberg also competed in last year’s tournament. She was eliminated in the pre-qualifying round of the singles competition, while making it to the sec ond round of qualifying in doubles. “It’s really hard to get in the main draw,” said women’s tennis head coach Bobby Kleinecke. “There are 32 players across the whole nation that get into the singles bracket and sixteen doubles teams. It’s a very good shot for us to get in there. This is the next best thing to the NCAA at the end of the year. It gives both girls a chance "to get a great win in doubles and also gives Jessica a great chance in singles.” The Roland and Hedberg team will be looking to make some noise this weekend after coming out of an off week that was preceded by a lack luster Cissie Leary Invitational two weeks ago. “We played a lot of matches...! felt we learned a lot about ourselves and what we needed to work on, so that’s the way we went about it. They handled the adversity well,” Kleinecke said. The main draw of the 2002 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American championships will take place begin ning this Thursday and continue through Sunday. Qualifying starts Tuesday. The championship will be decided on Sunday. The tournament this weekend marks the first of three national colle giate tennis championships to be played over the course of the 2002- 2003 women's tennis season. The next comes up in November at the Omni Hotel’s National Indoor Tournament in Dallas, Texas. The final championship tourna ment will be the NCAA’s at the end of the team season in May.
