cross in Lufkin, said they were inundated with peo
ple. “We just got a busload of 600 and he said that
1,400 are following him,” she said, referring to a
fleet of school buses carrying evacuees from the
Beaumont area.
Brown said Lufkin is the first major town that
evacuees traveling Highway 69 reach, a voyage that
could take seven or more hours on the congested
roadway.
The city’s civic center has been turned into a
medical unit for nursing home patients evacuated
from the coast, and area nursing homes have taken
additional patients. Brown said.
“It’s been so hectic here,” said Wendy Walker,
the front desk clerk at the sold-out 39-room Days
Inn in Nacogdoches, 15 miles north of Lufkin.
“Any time the vacancy sign came on today, I had
five or six cars blocking the road so no one else
could get in.”
Walker said guests have reported no hotel or
motel vacancies for a 75-mile radius of
Nacogdoches.
“I’m sending them to the shelter, but a lot of peo
ple don’t want to go there.”
In Tyler. East Texas Medical Center (ETMC)
sent eight ambulances to Beaumont Tuesday after
noon to evacuate 16 nursing home patients. ETMC
Tyler expects up to 30 patients from Beaumont hos
pitals. and ETMC Rusk expects up to 20 child bum
victims from a Galveston hospital.
Other shelters were set up as far away as
Nacogdoches, Center and Huntsville.
