‘Igby Goes Down stays afloat witi
crafty plot and smart dialogue

The name Igby Slocumb may
not be as memorable its Holden
Caulfield. But the sarcastic, dis
affected teen at the center ot the
bitterly funny Igby Govs Down
is not easily forgotten.
A movie that opens with
two teens killing their mother
had better know what it s
doing. And this one does.
Writer and director Burr
Steers has crafted an ironic,
literary tone whose closest
antecedent is The Royti!
Tvnvnbounis, another movie
where family dysfunction is so
severe, it morphs into theater
of the absurd.
Igby (Kieran Culkin) and
his older brother Oliver (Ryan
Phillippe) rather decorously
kill their mother (Susan
Sarandon) as she's snoring in
bed. Thereafter, the movie is a
flashback to Igby's unenviable
childhood and the metaphorical
bullets he has dodged on the
way to the murderous present.
Like a refugee from Catcher
in the Rye or Alice Miller s
notorious book The Drama of
the Gifted Child. Igby is pure,
burning potential trapped in a
world that neither understands
nor welcomes him.
He’s a dropout, a smart-
mouth. a punching bag and.
for most of the movie, a run
away staying in the downtown
loft where his godfather (Jeff
Goldblum) keeps his mistress
(Amanda Peet).
Life off the grid has its
perks. Igby gets a Summer of
42’s worth of sexual initiation
and eventually finds a partner
in crime in Sookie Sapperstein
(Claire Danes), an older girl
with only a slightly healthier
take on life's conundrums.
But then. Sookie isn't sad
dled with parents like Igby's: a

a bit cumbersome and Medea
is taken, and a lather (Bill

The story is structured, with
its title tickling the back of the
mind, as a kind of clift-hanger.
