MERIDA, Mexico (AP) — Tropical
Storm Isidore moved over open waters
Tuesday and headed toward the U.S.
Gulf coast after battering Mexico’s
Yucatan peninsula with heavy rains and
high winds, killing two people and
leaving another 300,000 homeless.
The National Hurricane Center in
Miami, warned that the storm would
likely strengthen into a hurricane again
as it moved over the Gulf of Mexico.
Projections had it heading north, where
hurricane watches were posted along
the coast from Cameron, La., to
Pascagoula, Miss.
AT 11 a.m. EDT, Isidore was 80
miles northwest of Merida on Tuesday
with winds of 60 mph. The center said a
tropical storm warning remained in
effect for Mexico’s Gulf Coast from
Cabo Catoche to Veracruz, with the
storm moving north-northwest at 8 mph.
Tropical Storm Lili killed at least
three people and ripped the roots oft
homes in St. Vincent, Barbados and
St. Lucia. It was expected to become a
hurricane later Tuesday or early
Wednesday.
At 8 a.m. EDT. Lili was centered
about 510 miles southeast of Santo
Domingo, the Dominican capital. With
maximum sustained winds of 60 mph,
it was moving west quickly at near 20
