Instead its a lonely violin and piano that create a sober atmosphere. With American Child, Vassar proves his latest endeavor as a music artist is tar from being a mistake. It’s a gift to the music world that can’t be ignored. 2218 Texas Ave. South ] (in the Fuddrucker’s Shopping Center)^^ ^ ii An artist’s sophomore album is pivotal, even when the musician is as successful a songwriter as Phil Vassar. His first album produced a number one hit and tour top 10 hits. Yet the big question remained: could he continue such success on his second album? The answer is a resounding yes. His clear voice and writing talents on Ameircan Child join once again to produce an album of rock ing songs and heartbreaking ballads. Vassar co-wrote every song on the album, which boasts an eclectic array of writers. Included on this list is wife Julie, Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, Fastball s Miles Zuniga, and well-known Nashville songwrit ers Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman. The result is songs woven together with lines such as, “He’s the redneck Picasso of the manual transmission” and “My moment of need was my finest hour." The songs are clever, poignant and, in some cases, amusing. If the lyrics aren’t enough to make listen ers stand up and notice, the music will do the trick. The intro to “Athens Grease" will tum heads, as it slowly builds to the heavy down- beat and guitar riffs that bring to mind some of ZZ Top’s biggest hits. In stark contrast. “I'm Already Gone’’ is devoid of the sharp two new songs, reworked withn«\» mental arrangements. Oxana Fedorova, a 24-year-old Russian law student, was ousted four months after she won the pageant, the organization said. Spokeswoman Mary Hilliard McMillan said the organization would not comment on the reason until Tuesday, when the first runner-up, Miss Panama Justine Pasek, 22, is expected to be crowned. Fedorova denied she had been fired and said she gave up the title herself. ‘The duties of a world beauty are wonderful. However, my prime .goal is my studies and career in Russia," Fedorova, who is pursuing a graduate degree in civil law, told RTR state televi sion. "I know I will remain Miss Universe for Russian citizens and for myself." Addressing what the network said were rumors that she had secretly married and was preg nant, Fedorova said: "I want a family, I love family, but it is a dream for me. I was never mar ried. I have not had children. I hope that this dream will come true in the future." Miss Universe cannot be mar ried or have children, according to pageant rules.
