While a party may con sist of anything from a group of people just barging out to a full-blown extravaganza, stu dents find that parties offer an opportunity to clo^e the books and take a break from school. ■While that time comes more often for some than others, everyone has a different approach onlhow to spend this time. ■One of the most notorious ways for college students to party is by having keg parties. However, many students opt for an alternative to ibis “norm.” ■For Amy Davis, a junior biomedical sciences m^jor. Finding time to spend with friends is an essential part of college life because it allows hef to escape from school. Craft parties are one way Davis said she is able to hang out with her fritnds and relax after a stressful school week. ■ It’s mostly a girl night, and we do all kinds of jerafts and watch ‘Trading Spaces,’ ” Davis said. “Around Christinas time we had a Chi iUmas craft night and did Christmas deco rations. Most recently, we have gotten into monies, where you glue glass pieces on foam boprd and then pour grout around it. We then pu| them up on the wall around our apartment. We ve also decorated cork boards with ban- dab as to make message boards and decorated picture frames.” ■According to Davis, craft parties offer a calm environment but still provide interaction with friends. Another alternative Davis recommends is playing games with a group of friends. “We have parties where people come over and play games, such as Guesstures, Outburst, or Forty-Two,” Davis said. “ It’s not a struc tured time, and you don’t get bored.” Davis said another benefit to playing games is that it does not require much money. Cooking is another popular alternative for students. Many find it as not only a.way to relieve the pressures that build up from school but also a time to experiment with something that is not too familiar. Amy Stair, a junior elementary education major, said a dinner party offers a reason for peo ple to come together in more formal environment. “1 don’t like to cook for myself so much; 1 like cooking for other people,” Stair said. “It’s not really that fun when you cook for yourself, but it is when you cook with, and for, other people.” Stair said that she feels more comfortable cooking recipes that she has prepared before when cooking for a group of people, but she also enjoys trying new recipes every once and awhile. “It makes you feel really mature to host a dinner party because everyone is relying on you to coordinate everything,” Stair said. Of course, as Stair found out, this may not always be a good thing. She remembers one dinner party she co-hosted with friends where they burned part of the dinner. This hasn’t stopped her from continuing to host dinner par ties, however. “It’s a good option because you knew that people will enjoy themselves especially when they are getting a home cooked meal,” Stair said. Around midterms and finals, a dinner party takes one’s mind off everything school-related, said Stair. She said special occasions, such as birthdays and television show premieres, are a good excuse to get together for dinner. According to Stair, the only drawback of hosting a dinner party is that the cost of food can get expensive. A cheaper substitute to a dinner party is a dessert party. A little twist to a dinner party is a cookout, something Jordan Dean, a senior electrical engineering major, enjoys hosting. “We have people over and grill about once or twice a month,” Dean said. According to Dean, after a football game is an ideal time to grill out. “You can buy more meat'when you don’t have to buy beer,” Dean said.
