I The storm shredded trees, knocked out power, set roofs ■ncmg in the air and prompted the state oil company to evacuate 8HXX) oil workers from drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. I The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the Category 3 storm could grow stronger and veer to north in two days, put ting it on a possible course for the U.S. Gulf Coast. ■ At 8 p.m. EDT, Isidore was about 20 miles 30 east of Merida. It was heading west- southwest at about 8 mph — a path expected to continue for at least a day. I The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Isidore’s maximum sustained winds were down s|ghtly to 120 mph and could wi aken more until it re-emerges over water in the Gulf of Mexico eaily Monday. I It was then likely to gradually veer toward Louisiana or Texas. Yucatan state Gov. Patricio Patron said “the worst of sce narios” was happening as Isidore marched along the state’s coast with 125-mph winds, then edged slightly inland toward Merida. With many areas cut off by telephone or road, the governor told the Associated Press he had no confirmed reports of deaths and no estimate of damage. Some local radio stations earlier reported deaths from traffic acci dents, but details and their rela tion to the storm were unclear. The governor said some coastal residents had rejected the appeals of troops trying to enforce his mandatory evacua tion order aimed at 70,000 peo ple. Officials canceled classes Monday for 480.000 students to free classrooms for use as shelters. The storm blasted down power lines and forced authori ties to cut power in other areas because of the danger. Several television and radio stations were knocked off the air. Winds howled over piles of branches in Merida’s main plaza Sunday night as residents hud dled in darkened homes, hotels and public buildings. “I’m supposed to fly out at noon tomorrow, but I’m guess ing that’s not going to happen,” said Richard Syrop, a 22-year- old grocery manager at a health food store in Tucson, Ariz. The state oil monopoly, Petroleos Mexicanos, announced it was evacuating more than 8,000 workers from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico as a precaution. Eight hundred others were left aboard pending developments. Heavy waves pounded the piers and washed onto coastal boulevards in Progreso, the peninsula’s main port city, 20 miles to the north. Reporters saw light poles uprooted and hurled to the ground as their lamp fixtures continued to twirl in the winds above. Hundreds of fishermen had returned to shore and secured small boats as the storm neared Progreso, said Capt. Alberto Ordaz Galindo, in charge of navigation for the port captain’s office. Isidore dumped 12 to 20 inches of rain on the sparsely populated northern coastline of the peninsula, knocking out phone and power services to small villages. Soldiers and police in all-ter rain vehicles scoured muddy roads and streets along the coast while the navy used small ves sels to cruise from village to vil lage enforcing the mandatory evacuations. Torrential rains associated with Isidore caused flooding that killed a 16-year-old boy and an 89-year-old man on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast and authorities there bused hundreds of families to higher ground. Hurricane warnings were in effect from Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico to the Mayan ruins of Tulum on the Caribbean. Isidore hit western Cuba on Friday and Saturday with 100 mph winds and torrential rains. The amount of damage was unclear, but a tour of the affect ed region found heavy flooding across the western part of the island. The White House has proposed a resolu tion that would authorize the president "to NEWS IN BRIEF use all means that he determines to be appropriate, including force, in order to defend the national security interests of the United States against the threat posed by Iraq, and restore international peace and security in the region." Mother in taped beating says she was having bad day TINLEY PARK, III. (AP) — Awoman caught on videotape beating her child in a depart ment store parking lot said Sunday she lost her temper because she was having a bad day. Madelyne Gorman Toogood, 25, told reporters Sunday she hit her 4-year-old daughter, Martha, in the head and back and pulled her hair — but did not punch her. On a surveillance videotape of the Sept. 13 incident, which has been televised national ly, Toogood appears to make punching motions toward her daughter, who is mostly hidden within the sport utility vehicle. "Martha didn't deserve what she got," Toogood said. "I just lost my temper." The girl, Martha Toogood, was placed in foster care when her mother turned herself in to authorities, who said the girl had no visible injuries. Authorities said Toogood left the Kohl's department store in northern Indiana angry because she was denied a cash refund for two pairs of jeans; she denied that the failed refund attempt was connected to the beating.
