My Big Fat Greek Wedding did not initially make waves at the box office. However, the romantic comedy has made a smooth comeback as last weekend’s number two box office hit. Nia Vardalos, the movie’s star, is responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes action. Vardalos based her screen adaption of My Bly Fat Greek Wedding on her one-woman show, and handles both the writing and acting elements of the film with finesse. Directed by actor Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, the film follows the life of 30-year-old Toula Portakalos (Vardalos). Frumpy and unmarried. Toula is a constant source of worry for her ultra-traditional Greek family, who prizes marriage and child-bearing as a woman’s greatest - and virtually only - role in life. After waiting tables at her family’s Greek restaurant. Dancing Zorba’s, Toula meets a handsome and mysterious stranger and decides to revamp her lifestyle, complete with new hair, ncu clothes and a new outlook on life. Toula then decides to take com puter classes at a local community college and snags a job at her aunt’s travel agency. Here, Toula bumps into the mysterious stranger again, but this time — thanks to her improved self image — she is able to strike up conversation and romance with the stranger, Ian Miller (“Sex and the City’s” John Corbett). It seems like a match made in heaven until the Portakalos fam ily becomes involved. Headed by Toula’s Windex-toting father, Gus (Michael Constantine), the family is initially shocked by Ian. who is a Xeno (non-Greek) as well as a vegetarian. Gradually, the Portakaloses accept lan, and an outrageous series of events proceeds until the day of Toula and Ian's big, fat. Greek wedding. The movie focuses primarily on what it's like to be the member of an embarrassingly over-the-top Greek family, while keeping humor in steady supply. Predictable but well acted. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a show worth giving a second shot. -Kendra Kingsley City By The Sea Warner Bros.
