“We exercised our responsi
bility,” he said. “And we lis
tened to the advisory commit
tee. It needs to be known that’s
what they are — an advisory
committee.”
Gates was unavailable for
immediate comment.
Aside from the majority
vote by the committee not to
recommend Bennett as a final
ist for the position, an engi
neering faculty vote was con
ducted that yielded an obvious
discrepancy in the members’
approval of Bennett and the
other three candidates.
Kushner received a 69 per
cent “acceptable” and 31 per
cent “unacceptable” vote from
71 faculty members. Junkins
was given a 60 percent accept
able and 40 percent unaccept
able rating by 90 faculty mem
bers. Reed was voted 82 per
cent acceptable and 18 percent
unacceptable by 77 faculty
members. Bennett received a
40 percent acceptable and 60
percent unacceptable rating
from a total of 62 faculty mem
bers, the source said.
“I’ve tried to stay above
this,” Bennett, said, according
to the Bryan College-Station
Eagle. “I feel like I’m a very
qualified candidate.”
Graves said he listened to
the opinions of committee
members for four hours but
ultimately disagreed.
“Not everyone is going to
agree,” he said, “but there
comes a time to step in and
support the person who was
chosen.”
According to The Eagle,
Bennett said he did not imme
diately know the committee
voted against him, and said
that Graves has assured him
that no rules were broken dur
ing the search process.
“I'm discouraged to hear
what’s going on, but we need
to put that behind us and get
on with what needs to be done
tor the college, the university
and the system,” Bennett said,
according to The Eagle.
