Irish enjoy early season succes
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Irish eys have
reasons to smile again.
Eight months after hiring coach ly Willigham
to “wake up the echoes,” Notre Dame has b^un to
restore the golden luster to college football most
storied program and bury parts of an ugly ottsason
The undefeated Fighting Irish are oft to thci best
sum since 1996, playing the type of football tht has
produced a record eight national titles and seven
Heisman Trophy winners. . _
“1 knew things would be different the firstime I
saw Coach on TV,” said Sean McTear, a jumofrom
Birmingham, Ala. “Somebody asked him how
many games he expected to win and he ansvrred.
’All of them. If I expected to win less. I'd be slhng
Notre Dame short.’
“That,” McTear added, “is the way you'nsup-
posed to think around here.”
After last weekend’s upset of
Michigan. Notre Dame is 3-0 and
ranked No. 12, back among the
game’s elite.
Just as important, a team beset
by bad football and off-the-field
problems for much of the last six
years is playing inspired and behav
ing even better.
And the person least surprised
by the dizzying turn of events?
That’s Willingham, who would be
coaching his eighth season at
Stanford if George O’Leary. Notre
Dame’s first choice for the job,
hadn’t lied on his resume.
Willingham was asked whether lie can fe» the
eyes of a nation settling on Notre Dame agams it
prepares to play Saturday at Michigan Stan his
alma mater and a team that has beaten the Irh for
five straight years. He cracked the slightest ht of
a smile.
“I’m told they are,” he replied in his typally
soft-spoken fashion.
Proof, though, is available at every turn, 'lere
is a buzz on campus, and phone calls to the um-
ni association office are full of praise, btre
Dame Stadium is packed and growing greerr by
the game.
The emerald, “Return to Glory” T-iirts
plucked otY shelves by students and alumnarc
being ordered via e-mail by U.S. soldie in
Afghanistan who listen to the games on the Aned
Forces Radio Network.
“Every once in a while, one will come in.ith
nothing except the word ’Unbelievable!’” saidim
O’Connor, the school's director of retail operalns.
“It’s not like they want to buy anything. 'iey
just want to feel a part of what goes on here.”
Willingham knows the feeling. He is blackjei-
ther Irish nor Catholic, but he always knew howoe-
cial this place w as. Raised a Methodist i- I
Carolina, he sneaked out of church on fall \ *
mornings to catch the Fighting Irish highM
Now he's in charge of creating theni
that’s been the easy part.
Willingham began by humming the
Dame Victory March” as he patrolled the 1
of the football offices, coming to work pac
of coaches named Rockne and Leahy. Ther f,
lenged his team to fulfill the lyrics’ lofty e,
Nota* Dame, including “wake up theechoe' I
ing her name.”
“This coaching staff has always bdte\-

Irish receiver Amaz Battle said. “I think
this team were saying it. but they truly, ir.
doubts. Now, guys are starting to believe ;
and more.”

With Willingham’s arrival, the team has
a new attitude. But the poise Notre DamesV
coming back against Michigan late
Saturday’s game is not the only way tome*
coach's influence.
“There’s a whole lot more yes-sirsacc

Dame Stadium.
“He's got these kids understanding
time to have fun and when it's time to

Tony Mullally brought his wife andy
