Al-Qaida suspects arrested for plot to bomb U.S. Enibas* SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore authori ties have arrested 21 people on suspicion most of them belong to an al-Qaida-linked militant group that was plotting to blow up the U.S. Embassy, the government said Monday. All the suspects were Singaporean citi zens, the Ministry of Home Affairs said with out releasing details of their arrests last month. None of them have been charged with any crimes, although they remain detained as allowed by the Internal Security Act. The ministry said 19 of the suspects belong to Jemaah Islamiyah, a hardline Islamic group that authorities here say has cells throughout Southeast Asia — a region increasingly regarded as a second front in the global war on terror. That fact was highlighted last week when U.S. embassies in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam shut down because of security threats preceding the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in the United States. Singapore, a key U.S. regional ally, last year arrested 13 alleged Jemaah Islamiyah members, claiming they planned to attack the U.S. Embassy and other Western interests in the wealthy city state. Some the 13 men arrested in December allegedly instructed those arrested last month to conduct “reconnaissance and survey s of select targets in Singapore, the government said. It gave few other details. a These latest arrests have se riously disrupted the Jemaah Islamiyah network in Singapore Ministry Statement Singapore Joun ’hen ( Spori footb ideline reporte > pose in eptember’s FI he know how i ause. ArringU “These latest arrests have seriously dis rupted the Jemaah Islamiyah network in Singapore,” the ministry statement said “There is no known imminent security threat from other Jemaah Islamiyah elements in Singapore.” Singapore has urged nearby Indonesia to Israeli soldiers kill Egyptian m in Gaza Strip during Yom Kippi JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli soldiers shot and killed an Egyptian man near an Israeli- controlled road in the Gaza Strip on Monday, as Israelis observed Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Although Yom Kippur ended Monday evening. Israeli forces said they would stay alert for terror attacks through Tuesday. Israel has tightened security in Palestinian areas during the hol iday for fear of attacks. Monday’s shooting hap pened at an intersection on the main north-south road through Gaza, near the Jewish settle ment of Gush Katif. There were conflicting reports about how it took place. The Israeli army said the Egyptian man threw several grenades at Israeli soldiers, but the army did not comment further. A top Palestinian security official said there was no clear explanation for the man’s death. “This man was killed for no reason,” Maj. Gen. Abdel Razek Majaidya said by telephone. “We condemn this killing." forced passengers to get out. The man confronted the soldiers after being told to get out of his car, said one witness, taxi driver Marwah Khateeb. 42. The man was unarmed and traveling in a taxi, Khateeb said. Israel has controlled the checkpoint for the la>t 19 months, and several Palestinians have been killed in the vanie area. arrest Jemaah Islamiyah’s alb : Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar £ Indonesian officials sa\ they haver,, against him — a stance triggenns world’s most populous Muslimna gmg its feet in the international a terrorism.
