Oh, those were the Cincinnati Bengals, who looked like a first-year team in losing 34-6 to San Diego on opening day. The Chargers play their home opener Sunday against the expansion Houston Texans, who pulled a shocker and beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-10 in their inaugural game. The Chargers consider the Texans, led by rookie quarter back David Carr, anything but an expansion team. They don’t envision, say, the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “They’re definitely a differ ent team than you've seen in the past, as far as the expansion thing goes,” Chargers tight end Stephen Alexander said, noting that Houston’s starting defense averages six years of experience. Kind words, considering that Alexander said after Sunday’s game the Bengals “were terrible.” Like most everyone else in the NFL, the Chargers were impressed with the way the Texans became the first expan sion team since the 1961 Minnesota Vikings to win their first game. “For Carr and Co. to come out and play as well as they did, it’s a big feat,” linebacker Junior Seau said. “They won on national TV. They won in a brand new stadium, with the hype of playing their cross-state rivals and all the pressure that goes with that, and having a rookie quarterback.” Can they do a Texans’ 2-0 step, becoming the first expan sion team to win its first two games? “That’s going to be the big question,” Seau said. “They beat a quality team. We’re not going to take anything for granted. We’re going to go out there and perform like we know how, and hopefully that’ll be good enough to be 2-0.” They're definitely a different teatn than you've seen in the past, as far as the expansion thing goes. — Stephen Alexander Chargers Tight End The Chargers, 13-point favorites, have one worry out of the way. “The Cowboys already took care of that, being the first team to lose to them,” said Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who rushed for 114 yards and one TD against the Bengals. “The pressure’s off us.” Although their big victory gave them confidence, the Texans say it won’t be hard putting it in the past. “Not when you’ve got Junior Seau to play next,” Carr said. “You see the tempo they want to play at, and you forget about the Cowboys real quick.’ Carr once looked up to Seau — literally — but now will try to SPORTS IN BRIEF beat the perennial Pro Bowler. Carr, who grew up in Bakersfield and played at Fresno State, got Seau’s autograph sev eral years ago. “I’m sure he doesn’t remem ber me. I was probably in junior high when I got it. He was a lot bigger back then. But that’s probably because I got a little taller,” Carr said. And richer, being the first pick overall in April’s draft. And he got off to a great start, throw ing a touchdown pass for his first completion. He finished with two TDs and 145 yards against the Cowboys. Carr won’t have to face Pro Bowl strong safety Rodney Harrison, out 2-3 weeks with a groin strain. And cornerback Quentin Jammer, the Chargers’ first-round draft pick out of Texas, has little chance of play ing. He has to get in shape after a seven-week holdout that ended only on Tuesday. The Chargers have a two-game ros ter exemption for Jammer and would have to release a player to activate him. Carr, who had to get more than 100 tickets for family and friends, figures the Chargers will still be intense. “Junior Seau is definitely the leader of that group,” Carr said. “He tries to disrupt. We definite ly have to account for him.” At 23, Carr and San Diego’s Drew Brees are the AFC’s two youngest quarterbacks. Brees, the second-year pro who beat out Doug Flutie for the starting job, is coming off an efficient first career start. He completed 15-of-19 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Texas A&M men’s golf team heads west to take on the University of New Mexico The Texas A&M men’s golf team will compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate tournament at the University of New Mexico on Friday. The Aggies opened their fall season with a seventh place finish when they competed in the first NCAA- sanctioned golf event in Europe last weekend. The team was boosted as David Tasker shot one over par for a top-ten finish in his college debut. Having a player in the top ten is a plus for the young Aggie team, and it will give them confidence going into the fall season. "I am excited about the season to come because I saw a lot of raw talent and potential this week," said head coach J.T. Higgins. "It is just a matter of time before the results fall into place." The team hopes to see those results manifested against a stacked field as it heads to New Mexico this weekend. Not only are the Aggies facing a tough field with a young squad, they are also playing in the same tournament that resulted in a 14th-place fin ish a year ago. “It will be interesting to see how we play," Higgins said, "This is a great test for our team to play against such a strong field." Higgins coached at the University of New Mexico before becoming the coach at A&M, and will be return ing home for the second time in two years, hoping to steal a victory from the returning champion Lobos.
