Ifc Friday, September 13, 2002 AGGIELI the BATTaL: Looking for a party Students plan to attend Ag Kickoff m crowd By Brian Sykes THE BATTALION For Christi Overbeck, a senior journalism major, Saturday won’t come soon enough. “I can’t wait to go to the party," Overbeck said. Self-billed as “the world’s biggest back-to- school party,” the Ag Kickoff concert at College Station’s Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater will return headliner Pat Green to the stage with opening acts Cross Canadian Ragweed and Honeybrowne on Saturday, Sept 14. “There’s no better way to start the school year than a good concert," Overbeck said. “I’ve seen Pat Green and Cross Canadian Ragweed, and I've heard good things about Honeybrowne. It should be a good show.” Since the inaugural show held in September 1993, the Ag Kickoff has wel comed Texas music artists Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen. David Allen Coe, Jack Ingram and Cory Morrow. John Dickson has been responsible for orchestrating the Ag Kickoff since 1993 and said Green is among the most popular musi cians in Texas. “His best performances are in College Station,” Dickson said. “The support he gets is tremendous. The band and the crowd feed off each other and it’s wonderful.” Green is headlining the Ag Kickoff for the second year in a row and during the past year he has been showcased on Country Music Television, played as the musical guest on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and been featured on the cover of Texas Monthly magazine. “College Station is one of my favorite places to play and the Ag Kickoff personifies the Aggies’ love of good music and a good party" Green said on www.agkickofT.com. With six out of eight band members hav ing attended A&M. the Ag Kickoff should serve as a sort of homecoming for the band. Green plans to go back into the studio by the end of the year to record his seventh album since Dancehall Dreamer was released in 1995. Rising band Cross Canadian Ragweed (CCR) place its root, in Oklahoma and have made an impact on the Texas music scene over the past two years. Its music has been described as alternative country, roots rock, hick rock and Texas music. The band has released three albums: Highway 377, Live and Loud at Hilly Bob's and their most recent release, Purple, which is dedicated to the little sister of CCR’s drummer and percussionist, Randy Ragsdale. She was killed last year in a car accident and purple was her favorite color. The Purple album liner notes read. "In September 2(X)I we lost our little sister...she loved life, people. God and music. Her favorite color was purple and this album is for her.” In CCR songs, all the lyrics are based on actual experiences the band has encountered in recent years. “Most of these songs are parts of my life that have happened.” explains Cody Canada, lead vocalist and lead guitarist, on www.crosscandianragweed.com, “Each and every Ragweed song is full of emo tion and true meaning; the lyrics speak for themselves.” Honeybrowne will open the Kickoff, opening ahead of CCR. w hich w ill be fol lowed by Green and his entourage. Honeybrowne works out of Austin and some of the members met while attending Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
