(AL) - With pageantry and prayers, religious
iders around the country marked the Sept. 11
niversary Wednesday with words of consolation
d palls for harmony during special services.
In St. Louis, Muslim Imam Waheed Rana
inked Americans for their tolerance following
3 terrorist attacks. “Our community is like a
>dy. When one part of the body is injured, the
aole body feels the pain,” he said.
“We can embrace each other,” Reform Rabbi
tsan Halve said at the outdoor ceremony. Added
jiruin Catholic Archbishop Justin Rigali: “We
ject every call of bigotry.”
Mans sermons urged fair treatment for
merican Muslims, who have protested clamp-
>wns on their charities and mosques and the
definite detention of immigrants.
“We pray for safety, but we also pray for those
oftled and deported since Sept. 11,” the Rev.
>hn Marsh, a Unitarian Universalist, told an
terfaith ceremony at San Francisco’s Golden
ate. Bridge.
Hundreds of religious services were held
ition wide to remember the victims of the suicide
hijackings that struck New York, Pennsylvania and
the Washington area. Worshippers wept as church
bells tolled and the names of the victims were read
from altars. Later, the faithful gathered at evening
candlelight vigils.
In a televised address to the nation with sever
al religious references. President Bush said
Americans “respect the faith of Islam” and only
fight those who “defile that faith.”
The Fiqh Council of North America, a supreme
court of Islamic scholars who interpret religious
law, issued an anniversary statement condemning
the attacks as violations of Muslim teachings.
Haider Bhuiyan, principal of the Islamic
Academy of Alabama, told students that terrorists
“are committing sin and on the day of judgment
they will have to pay for this.” Attending a prayer
service in the Islamic Center of Southern
California, Hoda Eltantawi said, “What hurt the
country hurt us, too. We are a part of it.”
At a Washington Mass, Bishop Wilton
Gregory, president of the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops, said people of faith should form
“a holy and unshakable coalition for peace.”

NLW YORK (AP) — Major
roadcast and cable news net
works abandoned regular pro-
ramining Wednesday to
evive the shocking images of
ypar ago and offer a gather-
ag place for a nation to grieve
nd remember.
The coverage brought back
nemories of last fall, when
K.BC. CBS and NBC reported
>n the terrorist attacks for four
ull days. This time, the fresh
md unfolding horror was
eplaced by a knowing sadness.
: “We are still coming to grips
; vith what happened on that
Jay,” NBC’s Tom Brokaw said.
The major networks all
-offered a similar mix of memori
al service coverage, somber
interviews with victims’ relatives
and recaps of what happened.
The disturbing images of a
year ago — planes striking the
World Trade Center, the fiery
towers and their eventual col
lapse — could be seen several
times. Networks had resisted
using them since the first few
days after the attacks and
promised to use restraint on
the anniversary.
CNN occasionally warned
viewers before showing the pic
tures. The network did show a
still picture of people falling
from the towers.
“We are trying to be careful
in how we use these and when
we use these,” CNN's Aaron
Brown said. “Understandably,
this is very hard to watch.”
Networks paused for a
moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.
EDT to mark the moment the
first plane struck the World
Trade Center. Former Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani began reading
the 2,801 names of people killed
at the site that day, a process that
took 2 1/2 hours.
The recital of names was
mixed with coverage of a
Pentagon memorial service. In
New York, the networks’ local
affiliates stayed with the
names, the staggering numbers
eloquently illustrating the
event’s magnitude.
