However, Dr. Karen L. Watson, dean of
faculties, associate provost and professor of
electrical engineering, said the Hopwood
decision was not applicable to decisions
about hiring faculty.

Hopwood) has interpreted the decision dif
ferently," Watson said.
University President Dr. Robert M. Gates
said diversity is one of the four imperatives
of Vision 2020 that he wants to focus on for
the next few years. Gates spoke in front of
the Senate before proceedings began.
Gates was straightforward about his pri
orities. After he put Vision 2020 at the top
of his list, he discussed diversity at length.
